Windsor — Due to the potential for inclement weather today, the top-seeded Windsor High baseball team got a jump on its Vermont Division III quarterfinal clash with Vergennes by agreeing to move the game up to Thursday. Then the Yellowjackets got a jump on the Commodores.

Windsor scored five times in the first three innings and played flawless defense behind Seth Balch in an 8-1 victory.

The Jacks (13-4) — one of two teams in D-III to be awarded a bye in the first round — will host the winner of today’s quarterfinal between No. 5 Leland & Gray and No. 4 Peoples in a Tuesday semifinal.

Dakota Page went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, driving in a run to cap Windsor’s four-run fourth inning and before plating a pair with a single in the fifth.

“Dakota’s a very hot hitter right now who can hit to all sides of he field,” Windsor coach Jamie Richardson said. “He can do it all.”

Page, the third baseman, also made a number of impressive plays to keep the Jacks error-free. He and shortstop Ryland Richardson both kept hard-hit balls in the infield in support of Balch, who allowed four hits and one walk while striking out 12.

“The ones that got in play, we did a good job with,” coach Richardson said. “To go error-free in our first (playoff) game, that’s a good way to start out.”

Balch, Duncan Frazer and Robert Slocum all had two hits, two runs and an RBI for Windsor.

Balch likely will start again on Tuesday, Jamie Richardson said.

“He battled through some wildness, but he pitched around it and we played some great defense behind him,” Tigers coach Jon Hamel said.

Kyle Fish went 1-for-3 with two runs and Tony Robertson was 1-for-3 with a run for Newport, which will visit No. 3 Belmont in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

“It was great win for us. It’s been upwards of 10 years so since Newport baseball has got a playoff win,” Hamel said. “Hopefully, we can keep that momentum going.”

Thetford 6

Chester, Vt. — The No. 10 Panthers finished the year 6-10 with a close loss against the No. 2 Chieftains in a Vermont Division III quarterfinal.

Thetford led, 5-1, after two innings and was in a 6-6 game before it surrendered the winning runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Panthers had the tying runs on base in the seventh.

“We had chances throughout the game and played well,” Thetford coach Phil Chaput said. “It was a good, close game.”

Emerson also played center field, throwing out a runner in the bottom of the sixth to keep it a two-run game.

The Panthers graduate only a pair in Dan Wells and Lawson Ouelette.

Derryfield 3, Woodsville 1

Woodsville — The No. 5 Engineers were bounced by the 12th-ranked Cougars from the first round of the NHIAA Division IV tournament.

Derryfield plated two on inside-the-park home run in the first inning, which hwas enough offense behind a strong performance from lefty pitcher Oliver Simon.

“If somebody told me we were going to give up three runs in a playoff game and lose, I wouldn’t have believed them, because we’re a good hitting team,” Woodsville coach Brent Cox said. “They found one of our weaknesses, because we don’t see many lefties. It was hard for us to do a lot of things once we got on base, because he had a good pickoff move.”

Simon struck out six with two walks in a three-hitter while picking off a pair of Engineer runners, including a leadoff runner in the bottom of the seventh.

Woodsville scored in the fifth on a hit by Corey Bemis to score Travis Stoddard (double).

Zach Moore pitched six innings for the Engineers, striking out 10 and allowing four hits and two walks.

Woodsville graduates six.

Concord —The ninth-ranked Cardinals fell to the No. 8 Giants in the first round of the NHIAA Division III playoffs.

Senior pitcher Drew Grenier (nine hits, four walks, eight strikeouts) allowed just two earned runs for the Cards in six innings for the loss.

“We had some miscues that led to five runs in the second inning,” said Stevens coach Paul Silva, whose rebuilding team finished 10-8. “We have a lot of young players, and I’m proud of the season they had.”

Stevens, which moves to D-II next season, graduates four players.

Green Mountain 10 Windsor 3

Chester, Vt. — Jasmine Frazer’s bases-clearing double in the seventh inning produced the lone runs for the No. 8 Yellowjackets against the top-ranked Chieftains in a Vermont Division III quarterfinal.

“I knew we were going to have to be on top of our game to win today,” first-year Windsor coach Heather Stearns said. “Unfortunately, we just didn’t get the bats going until late in the game.”

Kacie Charest and Hannah Wood both had a pair of hits for Windsor, while Carah Rugg allowed seven hits and 10 walks while striking out seven.

“It was a good season,” said Stearns, whose team carried no seniors and finished 6-12. “I’m looking forward to having everyone back.”
