The Center for Cartoon Studies, in White River Junction, has opened submissions for its third annual Cornish CCS Residency Fellowship. Deliberately set during the peak foliage window of mid-October to mid-November, the residency is meant to provide an inspiring space for artists to live and work for a month. Fellows will stay in the former home of the late author J.D. Salinger, give a lecture at the Center for Cartoon Studies and receive a $3,000 stipend.

First Friday In White River Junction
Long River Gallery and Gifts will host an opening reception, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., for a three-month show of encaustics by Stephanie Gordon, a Piermont artist and recently retired art teacher at Hanover High School. The opening of Gordon’s show will coincide with Rachel Obbard’s first day at the helm of the gallery, taking the place of longtime owner and proprietor Dave Celone.
Also on the docket for First Friday is a wine tasting with Artisanal Cellars at Scavenger Gallery from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Owner Stacy Hopkins shows mixed-media assemblage, woodblock and linoleum prints she made during a recent residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vt. Her resulting exhibit, titled “Rebirth,” marks a departure from Hopkins’ primary medium of jewelry.
Two Rivers Printmaking Studio will hold a reception for Carol Lippman, a part-time resident of West Newbury, Vt., from 5 to 7 p.m. Lippman’s show runs through June.
At the Newberry Pop-Up Market, local vendors will sell artwork, clothing, jewelry and other handmade items from 5 to 8 p.m.
Openings and Receptions
This month’s Artist Talk series at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center will feature Laura Ewing, a Cambridge, Mass.-based social worker and artist whose acrylic paintings are on view in the Williamson Gallery as part of the Lebanon hospital’s rotating art exhibitions. Ewing’s talk will take place Friday morning from 10 to 11:30 in Auditorium A.
Friday afternoon at 4:30, Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, in Cornish, will hold an opening reception for an art installation by students from Stevens High School, in Claremont, and Springfield (Vt.) High School on the theme of “Nature and Change.” The reception, which will take place in the Caretaker’s Shed, will continue through 6:30.
“O This Verdant Valley,” a show by the Upper Valley’s en plein air Odanaksis Art Group, opens Saturday in the Ledyard Gallery, at Hanover’s Howe Library. A reception will take place from 2 to 4 p.m.
Sunday afternoon at 4, BigTown Gallery’s Rochester, Vt.location will host a reception for the lithography show “Bearing Witness,” by Brookfield, Vt. artist Edward Koren, perhaps best known for his distinctive cartoons for The New Yorker. Through June 26.
Call for Art
In celebration of the 250th anniversary of Sunapee’s town charter, the Sunapee Historical Society and Sunapee Heritage Alliance are calling for art submissions for a show planned in mid-August at the Livery in Sunapee Harbor, on the theme of “Scenes of Sunapee Through the Years.” Artists of all levels are invited to submit paintings, drawings, pastels, prints, collages and sculptures depicting some aspect of Sunapee. The call is also open to those with historical artwork of Sunapee, so as to juxtapose past and present. The application deadline is July 20.

The Randolph-based Clara Martin Center is seeking submissions for an art and poetry show on the theme of “Abundance: Celebrating Creativity in Mental Health, Wellness and Recovery.” For applications and instructions on how to submit, go to claramartin.org/art-show. The deadline is July 31. The exhibit will open Sept. 10 at the Chandler Gallery, in Randolph.
The Center for the Arts invites artists from central New Hampshire and Vermont to submit up to four works to its “Naturally New England” art exhibit.
