Langdon, n.h. — The undefeated Newport High softball team used a little small ball to triumph Friday in a rare nail-biter.

In a bona fide pitchers’ duel between the Tigers’ Lacey McNeel and Wildcat ace Chloe Vogel, the Tigers laid down three bunts in the top of the ninth inning — two of them singles — to spearhead a 1-0 win in nine frames.

McNeel led off witih a bunt single and moved from first base to third on a hit-and-run with Kendall Hamilton laying down a sacrifice bunt.

Fall Mountain intentionally walked Stacia Dame, who stole second before Alyssa Burr made the Cats pay. Burr’s squeeze bunt brought home McNeel with the game’s only run.

McNeel struck out the side in order in the home half of the ninth inning. Dame had two hits in the game.

It was the first victory by fewer than three runs this season for Newport, which is 12-0. Fall Mountain is 5-7.

Both pitchers allowed just four hits during complete games. McNeel struck out 14 batters and walked two.Vogel fanned 12 and walked one. The Tigers visit Conant on Wednesday.
