Orford — Senior Dashiel Fukushima put together a doozy for the Rivendell Academy baseball team, striking out 14 batters in a 2-0 win over Chelsea on Thursday afternoon.

“He’s been good for us for all four years,” Rivendell head coach Eric Reichert said.

Fukushima allowed only three hits and two walks in the complete-game effort to help improve the Raptors to 4-4. He was also 1-for-1 at the plate with a run scored.

Rivendell scored a run in the first inning and another in the sixth for the victory. Charlie Bradley finished the game 1-for-2 with an RBI, driving in sophomore Dylan Ricker from third base in the first inning. Raptors junior Zach Dexter later drove in Fukushima from third base in the sixth inning on a deep fly ball into center field.

The victory snaps a three-game losing streak for the Raptors, who fell to Chelsea, 1-0, on the road last Saturday. Rivendell travels to Williamstown on Saturday.

Newport 10, Mascoma 2

West Canaan — Newport’s Kyle Fish allowed three hits and struck out six as the Tigers topped the Royals.

Newport racked up 13 hits and nine runs in the first four innings. Fish led the way offensively, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jarred Meyette and Tony Robinson finished the game with two RBIs each. The Tigers (8-4), who have won three in a row, travel to Fall Mountain today.

Mascoma scored both of its runs in the fifth inning. Devin Tetreault was 1-for-3 with an RBI double. The Royals (2-9) travel to Raymond today.

Harwood 11, Oxbow 0

Bradford — Shawn French provided Oxbow’s only hit.

French, Cody Grant and Jace Page split time on the mound for the O’s (8-3). Harwood finished the game with 16 hits including three doubles, a triple and a grand slam. Oxbow travels to Lamoille today.

Leland & Gray 7South Royalton 5

Townshend, vt. — The Royals scored all its runs on zero hits, but fell to 10-2.

Jake Hewitt threw four innings for South Royalton, allowing no walks and two hits while striking out seven. Logan Martin and Carder Stratton also pitched for the Royals.

SoRo hosts Whitcomb-Rochester on Saturday.

Hopkinton 9, Sunapee 3

Hopkinton, n.h. — Sunapee gave up a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning as Hopkinton scored seven runs on four errors, three walks, a hit batter and two hits to drop the Lakers to 7-6.

Sunapee’s offense managed only four hits in the loss. Jordan Chappell was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Lane Smith was 2-for-2 and Harper Flint was 1-for-3. The Lakers amassed five errors, five walks and hit two batters.

Sunapee hosts Pittsfield on Monday.

Lyndon 4, Thetford 3

Thetford — Ryan Pepe hit into a double play with the tying run, Aidan Moore, on first base in the seventh inning as the Panthers fell to 5-7 against VPA Division I foe Lyndon.

Lawson Ouellette allowed five hits, three earned runs, one walk and struck out five in six innings of work in the start. Owen Deffner struck out three in the seventh inning in relief. Thetford scored two runs in the third inning and another in the sixth. It hosts U-32 today.

Stevens 13, Kearsarge 10

Claremont — Six Cardinals rapped out two or more hits, and Josh Stithen pitched three shutout innings of relief in his varsity pitching debut as Stevens (7-6) outlasted Kearsarge.

Stithen allowed four hits with one walk to warn the win. Drew Grenier and Trey Theriault eac hhad three hits and three RBIs for Stevens, while teammates Ethan Johnson, Alex Taylor, Derrick Stanhope and Tyler Bonneau added two hits apiece. Stanhope scored three runs, and Johnson, Bonneau and Aiden Cahill scored two each.

The Cards grees Winnisquam today.

Softball

Newport 15, Mascoma 0

West Canaan — Lacey McNeel struck out 10 and allowed four hits while going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Tigers.

Kendall Hamilton and Kelsey Wheeler added three hits each as Newport (11-0) scored 15 runs on 17 hits and three walks. Mascoma’s Alyssa Hammond, Morgan Prentiss, Sam Pecarraro and Kayla Hammond all had hits.

Mascoma (4-9) travels to Raymond today.

Newport 20, Hanover 0 (5)

Norwich — The Tigers blasted 22 hits to sweep their unusual doubleheader and stay undefeated.

Lacey McNeel pitched a perfect game, striking out eight to shut out the Marauders. Kendall Hamilton was 5-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Kelsey Wheeler added four hits, four runs scored and five RBIs and Libby Tremblay was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Newport (11-0) travels to Fall Mountain today.

Hanover’s Becca Wilson struck out two in the loss. Hanover (3-9) hosts Stevens today.

Sunapee 18, Hopkinton 8

Hopkinton, n.h. — Erin Moynihan was 4-for-4 with three RBIs to help the Lakers improve to 5-7.

Hannah Cooney struck out five, walked one and gave up three hits and one earned run in five innings of relief. Elizabeth Bennett was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs and Kalleigh Durkee scored three times and drove in three RBIs, including a triple in the first inning to start the scoring for Sunapee.

The Lakers host Pittsfield on Monday for senior day.

Oxbow 14, Harwood 0

Bradford, Vt. — Madison Fornwalt struck out 12, allowing one hit and one walk as the O’s improved to 8-2.

Fornwalt was also 3-for-4 with a double, a base hit and three runs scored. Alyssa Armitage was 2-for-4 with two doubles. Oxbow hosts Lyndon next Tuesday for senior day.

Trinity 9, Lebanon 5

Lebanon — Kaitlyn Veracka was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Madison Hunt was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Raiders.

Hunt struck out two and allowed five hits and 16 walks in the loss. Lebanon (0-13) travels to Souhegan today.

Lyndon 25, Thetford 3 (5)

Thetford — Crystal Parshley was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored for Thetford (5-4).

Lily Vaughan and Harlee Gray had the Panthers’ other two hits in the loss. Thetford hosts U-32 today at 4 p.m.

Springfield 17, Hartford 7

Springfield, Vt. — Kelsie Thibodeau had two hits and Cassidy Beisler had one hit in her varsity catching debut as the Canes fell to 4-9 on Wednesday.

Sam Walz and Kylee Beaucage split time in the circle. Hartford travels to Rutland today.

Boys Lacrosse

Woodstock 10, Middlebury 9

Woodstock — Lucas Piconi scored two goals and provided four assists as the Wasps scored five goals in the fourth quarter to overcome a halftime deficit.

Cullen McCarthy added two goals and two assists for Woodstock (11-2). Caden White netted three goals, Field Willis scored two and Patrick Potter netted one. Gabe Marsicovetere was credited with four saves in net.

The Wasps travel to Brattleboro on Wednesday.

Hanover 11, Souhegan 8

Amherst, n.h. — Graham Penfield and Charlie Baughman each scored three goals and provided two assists as the Marauders improved to 6-9.

Kyle Rozzi added three goals and an assist. Brian Pattison added two goals and Mason Winter made 11 saves in net. Hanover, which led 6-4 at halftime, hosts Middlebury on Saturday.

H.S. Track

Oxbow’s Boys, Girls Take Third

Lyndon, vt. — Jarret Rock and Hannah Giesing led the O’s with a combined seven first place finishes at an eight-team meet on Wednesday at Lyndon Institute.

Rock, a junior, won the 100, 200, long jump and triple jump — setting a new school record in the triple with a jump of 40 feet, 10.75 inches. Giesing, a senior, finished first in the 200, 400 and long jump for the girls. Oxbow’s boys and girls teams placed third in scoring.

For the boys, Timothy Hodges won the 110 hurdles (16.75), and placed second in the 300 hurdles (43.90) and the triple jump (39-10). Calvin Cook also won the discus (106-4.5) and took second in the shot put (39-7.5).

For the girls, O’s freshman Kelly Daigle won the discus (99-1), was second in the shot put (29-0.5) and placed third in the javelin (80-6). Emily Carson also won the high jump (4-10).

College Track and Field

Dartmouth Sending 15 To NCAA East Regional

Hanover — Fifteen athletes from Dartmouth qualified for the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Regional at the USF Track and Field Stadium in Tampa, Fla., for a three-day meeting starting next Thursday.

Big Green sophomore star Cha’Mia Rothwell lead the women with a qualification in a pair of events, the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump. Rothwell’s season was highlighted by winning the Ivy League title in the 100m hurdles in a school and Ivy League record 13.24 seconds. Lauren Sapone and Julia Stevenson qualified for the 3,000, Bridget Flynn qualified for the 1,500, Julia Valenti will compete in the pole vault and Maria Garman and Olivia Winer will make the trip for high jump and javelin, respectively.

For Rothwell and Valenti, this marks their second NCAA East Regional appearance in as many years.

For the men, Dartmouth trio Max Frye, Alec Eschholz and Parker Johnson all qualified for the 400 hurdles. Henry Raymond will run in the 1,500 and Tim Zepf will compete in the 800. Marco Pompilj also qualified for the 3,000. Away from the track, Colin Minor qualified for the hammer throw and Ben Colello will compete in the javelin throw after a strong showing at the Ivy Heps two weeks ago.

Additionally, Ben Ose will compete in the 2018 NCAA Championship Meet in Oregon as one of the competitors in the decathlon.

Men’s Soccer

Duernberger Named Dartmouth Assistant

Hanover — Big Green men’s soccer head coach Bo Oshoniyi announced the hiring of Chad Duernberger as an assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Duernberger worked with Penn State’s men’s soccer program for the last seven years and was promoted to associate head coach in 2016.

He helped lead the team to back-to-back Big Ten regular season titles and coached them to two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Prior to his time at Penn State, Duernberger spent three seasons as the head coach at the University of Charleston, a Division II program.
