Hanover — A rare barrage of home runs helped the Dartmouth College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Cornell on Saturday. The Big Green slugged four straight homers in the first game, an 8-4 victory, before adding a 7-2 victory to get the sweep.

Dartmouth improved to 14-14 on the season, 8-3 in Ivy League play.

The first game was scoreless with two outs in the bottom of the third inning when euphoria broke out for the Big Green. With two outs, Micah Schroder belted a solo shot to right field to start the party. Morgan Martinelli followed with a bomb to left field. Schae Nelson and Taylor Ward each added home runs deep to center. The four consecutive home runs tied the NCAA record and set an Ivy League mark.

Dartmouth added three more runs in a fourth-inning rally that featured an RBI double by Martinelli. The Big Green closed the offensive book in the fifth on an RBI triple by Jade Bravo.

Breanna Ethridge pitched five innings to get the win, striking out four while allowing four hits and two runs. Heather Turner pitched two innings of relief, allowing a pair of runs on three hits with one strikeout.

The Big Green wasted no time taking the lead in the nightcap, pushing across five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The first three runners reached base before Taylor Ward was hit by a pitch to force in the first run. Calista Almer followed with an RBI groundout. Tatyanah Castillo then ripped a two-run double and McKenna Gray had an RBI single to give the hosts a 5-0 edge.

Shelby Wilkison tossed a complete game for the Big Green to win game two, allowing five hits and four walks while fanning three.

With inclement weather expected today, the third game of the series with the Big Red (11-17, 6-5) has already been postponed.

College Baseball

Dartmouth 4, Cornell 2Cornell 8, Dartmouth 3

Ithaca, n.y. — Cole O’Connor tossed seven strong innings to lead the Big Green (8-16-1, 4-3-1 Ivy) to a win in the first of two games at Cornell (6-15-1, 2-6).

O’Connor (4-3) won his third Ivy League game in as many starts, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks while fanning four.

Dartmouth scored a pair of runs in the third inning to take an early lead. Steffen Torgensen and Bennett McCaskill each singled before Sean Sullivan walked to load the bases. Matt Feinstein followed with a run-scoring single before Kyle Holbrook added an RBI sacrifice fly. Michael Calamari and Torgersen followed added RBI singles to close the offensive book in game one.

Austen Michel relieved O’Connor to start the eighth and retired six of the seven batters he faced, two on strikes, to earn his fourth save of the season.

With Dartmouth trailing, 5-0, in the eighth inning of the nightcap, McCaskill got the Big Green on the board with a run-scoring double. Holbrook followed with a solo home run in the ninth inning before Blake Crossing added an RBI single.

Clay Chatham took the loss for Dartmouth despite setting a career-high with eight strikeouts.

The rubber match of the three-game series is scheduled for today, with first pitch at 1 p.m.

New London — The Chargers (3-14 overall, 1-5 NAC) walked off with a win in game one before dropping a heartbreaker in game two to Husson.

Trailing, 1-0, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Chargers scored the game-tying run on an error. Tim Unczur followed with a pinch-hit RBI single to help the hosts walk off with the win.

Woodstock Union High alumnus Dougie Avellino had two of Colby-Sawyer’s three hits in game two.

Women’s Lacrosse

Dartmouth 19, Cornell 10

Ithaca, n.y. — Ellie Carson had five goals to lead Dartmouth (8-2 overall, 4-1 Ivy) to its first win at Cornell since the 2012 season.

Dartmouth led, 7-1, midway through the first half and controlled play throughout. Katie Bourque and Kierra Sweeney each added four goals. Elizabeth Mastrio added two goals. Larsen Bennett, Kellen D’Alleva, Campbell Brewer and Sarah Ross each added one goal. Ross’ goal was the first of her collegiate career.

Dartmouth starts a three-game homestand on Wednesday with a visit from Vermont.

Men’s Lacrosse

Princeton, n.j. — Sixteen Big Green players ended up with at least a point in the loss at Princeton (6-5, overall, 1-3 Iv).

Jack Korzelius and Liam O’Connell each had two goals and an assist for Dartmouth (2-9, 0-4). Richie Loftus added a goal and two assists. Goaltender Alex Burnley had nine saves.

Austin Meacham, Kiernan Gunn, Mike Connolly, Chris Bacotti, William Stonestreet and Jimmy Heidt each scored their first collegiate goals during Dartmouth’s fourth-quarter rally. The Big Green outscored Princeton, 6-3, in the final frame.

Big Green Takes Bill Cup

Hanover — Dartmouth fought off the cold conditions to edge Boston University for the Bill Cup, the second straight victory in the event for the host Big Green.

The varsity four, coxed by Kevin He, beat the Terriers by eight seconds with a time of 6:10.94. The Big Green added wins in the second varsity and the first varsity eight, each with narrow victories over the Terriers.

Lightweight Rowing

Dartmouth Second In Biglin Bowl

Boston — The Big Green finished second to undefeated Harvard in the Biglin Bowl.

Dartmouth finished eight seconds behind the Crimson in the first varsity event with a time of 5:53.49. The Big Green were 10 seconds back in second varsity. Harvard then raced three boats in third varsity, each of which outpaced the Big Green to help the host Crimson clinch the title.
