Recreation Briefs: Norwich’s Campfield on Regional Water Skiing Team

Norwich — Abby Campfield is heading toward big things on water skis.

The Marion Cross School sixth-grader was recently named to the American Water Ski Association’s Eastern region junior development team. Campfield earned her slot on the squad by qualifying for and competing in the Eastern Region Water Ski Championships in Monroe, N.Y., back in July. Campfield finished eighth in the girls ages 11-13 slalom at regionals.

Campfield, 11, is a past Vermont state champion in her age-group slalom, having won the title last summer at Wrightsville Reservoir in Montpelier. She is currently ranked 14th in the East and 86th nationally in her division (Girls 2).

Ross, Curtis SpeedThrough NHARA Super-G

Lyme Center — Ford Sayre’s Lacy Curtis and Jack Ross claimed the club’s top finishes at the New Hampshire Alpine Racing Association’s U14 Super-G championship held at the Dartmouth Skiway last week.

The girls took the slopes on Thursday, with Attitash’s Haven Loring winning in a single-run time of 56.63 seconds. Curtis took ninth, clocking 59.47 seconds, the last athlete to break the one-minute mark. Anna Testorf (14th), Grace Lewandoski (15th) and Greta Holland (20th) cracked the top 20 for Ford Sayre.

The boys hit the trail on Friday, with Franconia Ski Club’s Nolan Sweeney (57.03) getting the win. Ross led the Ford Sayre skiers by placing seventh (59.11). Clubmate Luke Dwyer also made the top 20, finishing 14th.

Schiffman, Ross ScoreAt U16 GS Qualifiers

Gorham, n.h. — Ford Sayre Academy skiers Eva Schiffman and Ethan Ross scored in both days of their NHARA U16 giant slalom qualifiers last week.

Schiffman started with an eighth-place result at Wildcat on Saturday followed by an 11th at Attitash on Sunday to gain points in both events. Maya Holmes (ninth, 16th), Riley Craft (ninth, 21st) and Lucy Doyle (21st, 22nd) also doubled up, while FSA’s Siena Curtis (13th) and Kimball Union Academy’s Willa McGough (25th) succeeded at Attitash. Skiers in the top 30 of either race gained points that will determine spots on the New Hampshire roster for the Eastern U16 Championships later this winter.

Ethan Ross led FSA competitors in boys’ races held at Waterville Valley and Loon Mountain, taking ninth and 10th, respectively. Colter Lingelbach-Pierce was in position to gain points at Loon by placing 10th in his firt run, but he couldn’t complete his second.

The series concludes with slalom competitions on Feb. 17-18. Girls will compete Gunstock and Cannon Mountain’s Mittersill slopes while the boys will race at Ragged Mountain and Proctor Academy’s Blackwater Ski Area.

CSC Skiers Lead Macomber

Lyme Center — Colby-Sawyer College teammates Shelby Kantor and Courtney Couture led a top-four sweep of Sunday’s Macomber Cup giant slalom at the Dartmouth Skiway.

Kantor finished in a two-run time of 2 minutes, 1.54 seconds, and Couture, a Lyme resident, was close behind in 2:02.33. Colby-Sawyer’s Katy Harris and Sarah Auer filled out the top four.

Hanover’s Caitlin Blinkhorn, representing the Holderness School, was seventh. FSA’s Isla Cotter took 11th.

Colby-Sawyer also took honors in the men’s race, with Cody Wilson winning in 1:51.03. FSA’s Alexander Purcell placed third, teammate Colin Rozzi was seventh and Matty Siegel claimed 19th.

U10s Hit Kinder Kombi

Newbury, n.h. — The Ford Sayre Ski Council U10s hit the Mount Sunapee slopes on Jan. 27 for the Kinder Kombi, a competition featuring slalom and giant slalom racing.

Ben Ames had Ford Sayre’s top day, taking third place just ahead of teammate Leo Sacerdote. Hayden Clapp was 11th, Henry Ruth took 14th and Sumner Finley was 17th for FSSC.

Among the girls, Ford Sayre’s Kait Christensen was 13th, Deming Dwayer landed in 19th place and Josie White claimed a 20th-place result.

Sled Bowling for a Cause

Hanover — The Hanover High School Nicaragua March Intensive group will hold a day of sled bowling and other fun activities on Sunday to raise money an upcoming program.

The group is set to visit the Nicaraguan town on Masaya to help build a pair of houses and has established a scholarship fund to help defer Hanover students’ costs to attend university programs in the capital of Managua during their trip. Sunday’s event, which will feature sled bowling, dodgeball and other activities, runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and all ages are invited to take part.

The $5 admission includes sled bowling and hot chocolate. All action will take place at Merriman-Branch Field behind the high school.

Moonlight Snowshoe in Vt.

Brownsville — The Climb Fitness Center will host a one-hour guided moonlight snowshoe tour of Ascutney Trails on Feb. 10.

The hiking tour takes place from 5-6 p.m. Afterward, participants are invited to enjoy hot cocoa by the center’s fire pit. Hikers can bring their own shoeshoes or rent them from the center. Rental shoes will support weights between 40 and 260 pounds.

NLG at Two Meets

Wilder — Athletes from Wilder’s Northern Lights Gymnastics hit a pair of meets around New England on Jan. 26-28.

A small contingent went south to Hartford, Conn., for the American Classic. Several NLG club members recorded fifth-place results in various implements, among them Lebanon’s Josie Goodwin in the Level 7 vault (9.25 points) and Norwich’s Shaylee McBride in the Level 9 vault (8.725) and floor exercise (8.50). West Lebanon’s Bella Roebuck was sixth in the Level 7 balance beam (9.10), and Hanover’s Abby Feyrer was sixth in the Level 8 vault (8.60).

Closer to home, two NLG competitors earned all-around victories at the Snowflake Classic in Barre, Vt. Hanover’s Alicia Sanyal won the Level 4 senior title with an all-around score of 32.850, backed by victories in the beam (9.20) and floor (8.75).

NLG’s Jenna Spaulding also was an all-around champion, taking Level 6 with 33.50 points with the help of an implement win in the bars (8.05).

Hartford’s Geneva Durgin took second all-around in Level 4 junior A (33.150), and Norwich’s Katie Genzer did the same in Level 5 with 31.675 points.

Winter WingDing

Enfield — Mascoma Valley Parks and Recreation, working with the Enfield Village Association and Mascoma Sailing Club, invites the public to join its Winter WingDing on Mascoma Lakeside Park on Feb. 10 from noon-4 p.m.

Visitors will get a chance to try out a variety of activities on the Mascoma Lake ice, including fat-tire mountain bikes, Kitewings and Nordic skis and skates. The day will also include s’mores, snowman village construction and other activities.

Snowshoeing at APD

Lebanon — The Lebanon Recreation and Parks Department is planning a series of showshoe hikes on trails at the Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital campus in February.

The hikes are scheduled for Feb. 9, 16 and 23, each running from 10 a.m.-noon. Lebanon Recreation staff will lead each group; participants are recommended to dress for winter conditions and bring a snack, water, backpack and any additional equipment.

NHBUA Seeks Umpires

Laconia, n.h. — The New Hampshire Baseball Umpires Association will hold clinics this spring for aspiring arbiters.

Anyone interested in umpiring at the high school varsity, junior varsity, freshman or middle school levels is invited to a clinic at Laconia High School on March 25 at 2 p.m. The cost to attend is $65.
