Melbourne, Australia — Andy Murray underwent surgery on his right hip on Monday and said he hopes to be back playing in time for Wimbledon.

The former No. 1-ranked Murray, a three-time major winner, has not played a competitive match since a quarterfinal exit at Wimbledon last July. His current ranking is No. 19.

Murray has been told to expect a 14-week recovery period, and he is targeting a return to the court by June. The 30-year-old, however, accepted he will have to reduce his workload on court.

“I’m certainly not going to be putting in the same amount of tournaments and effort to try to get to No. 1,” Murray told British media.

Smith, Wright ReturnTo Red Sox Staff

Boston — Boston pitchers Carson Smith and Steven Wright, both coming off injuries, agreed to one-year contracts with the Red Sox that avoided salary arbitration.

Smith missed most of the past two seasons while recovering from an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. Since he was acquired by the Red Sox, the reliever has appeared in eight games over two years.

An All-Star in 2016, Wright made just five starts last season. The knuckleballer had left knee surgery in May.

Timbers Sign Coach

Portland, Ore. — Giovanni Savarese was formally introduced as the head coach of the Portland Timbers on Monday.

The 46-year-old former player had been coach of the North American Soccer League’s New York Cosmos since 2012. He led the team to three Soccer Bowl championships in five seasons.

Savarese replaces coach Caleb Porter, who unexpectedly parted ways with the Timbers in November. In five seasons under Porter, Portland posted a 68-50-52 record and won the MLS Cup championship in 2015. The team finished atop the Western Conference last season.

Second-Tier NASLSkipping Spring Slate

New York — The North American Soccer League will skip its spring season following the U.S. Soccer Federation’s decision to revoke its provisional second-tier status.

The NASL said on Monday it plans to shift to the international calendar of August-May seasons, pending the outcome of its appeal in its lawsuit against the USSF. After the second-tier status was denied, the NASL filed an antitrust suit against the USSF in federal court in Brooklyn.

The NASL was denied a request for a preliminary injunction on Nov. 4. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments Dec. 15, with a ruling to come.

NASL plans to start its season Aug. 11 with seven teams — in Fullerton, Calif.; Indianapolis; Jacksonville, Fla.; Miami; New York; Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and San Diego.

The Soc Takes website reported Monday that Indianapolis plans to shift to the second-tier United Soccer League this season.
