President Donald Trump approved a major disaster declaration for Grafton, Sullivan, Belknap, Carroll and Coos counties in New Hampshire and for Orange, Addison, Chittenden, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, Orleans, Washington and Windham counties in Vermont.
The wind storms and rain on Oct. 29 and 30 caused widespread power outages, road damage and flooding, including in downtown Canaan.
A section of Route 25A in Orford also was closed.
A preliminary damage assessment by FEMA found that statewide public damage costs in New Hampshire exceeded $5.9 million.
“This storm significantly strained state and local resources as emergency responders dealt with heavy rainfall, county-wide flash flooding, damaging winds, significant debris that restricted travel and operations, and historical power outages,” Gov. Chris Sununu said in a statement. “Through this major disaster declaration, those most heavily impacted by the storm can have access to federal support for response efforts.”
Vermont Gov. Phil Scott in late November wrote Washington to say Vermont suffered more than $4 million in public damage, not counting at least $12 million in recovery costs for Green Mountain Power, the state’s largest electric utility.
