Lenzerheide, Switzerland — Dartmouth College graduate Sophie Caldwell finished second in the Tour de Ski opener in a freestyle sprint at Lenzerheide behind hometown Swiss favorite Laurien Van Der Graaf, who picked her first career victory.

Caldwell qualified third, with fellow American Jessie Diggins qualifying second to lead five American women qualifiers. Diggins broke a pole mid-race in the final and settled for fifth. Caldwell won her opening quarterfinal sprint and then finished just behind the leader to earn a satisfying second place finish in her best-ever freestyle sprint result.

Saturday’s opener was the first of seven stages in nine days of the Tour de Ski. Today the competitors will move over to classic distance racing.

Geraghty-Moats at Qualifier

Park City, Utah — West Fairlee native Tara Geraghty-Moats will compete today in the 2018 U.S. Olympic Trials for ski jumping at the Utah Olympic Park in Park City, Utah.

Geraghty-Moats will be among the jumpers looking to win the qualifying event to earn a place on the 2018 U.S. Olympic team. The U.S. made its women’s Olympic debut in ski jumping in 2014. Sarah Hendrickson, a member of the 2014 team, will also be looking to earn her way back onto the team for the upcoming Pyeongchang games.

Fletcher Rallies For Olympic Spot

Park City, Utah — Bryan Fletcher qualified for his second consecutive Olympic team in Nordic combined after rallying for a victory at the U.S. Trials on Saturday.

Fletcher finished the 10-kilometer cross-country course in 25 minutes, 6.81 seconds to overcome a poor showing in the earlier ski jump. He placed fifth out of nine athletes after jumping a distance of 86.5 meters and scoring 102.3 points.

Ben Loomis earned the lead starting spot heading into the 10K race after scoring 123.2 points on his jump. Loomis jumped a distance of 92.5 meters at a speed of 55.1 mph (88.8 kph).
