Lyme, N.H. — Charles R. Balch, 99, of Lyme, died at The Grafton County Nursing Home on Monday, Dec. 4, 2017.

He was born in Lyme on Oct. 16, 1918, the son of Ralph and Mareta (Smalley) Balch. He attended Lyme School, was a 1936 graduate of Hanover High School and graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Hotel Administration in 1941.

In June of 1943, he married Mertie (Uline) Balch and they resided and raise their family in Lyme.

He worked for Dartmouth College at the Hanover Inn for 35 years, retiring in 1980.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Donald J. Balch.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Mertie; his daughter, Priscilla Power (Sam); and his son, Russell Balch (Sandy) all of Lyme. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Troy, Kyle, Sarah, Tina, R.J., Heather, and Justin; seven great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Uline; and several nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held at a later date.
