Local Roundup: Harvard Edges Dartmouth Women

Hanover — Harvard’s Val Turgeon scored in the third period to lift the Crimson over the Dartmouth College women’s hockey team, 1-0, on Wednesday at Thompson Arena.

The Big Green dipped to 3-9-0 and 1-7-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Crimson improved to 7-4-1 and 5-2-1.

Turgeon stole the puck and fired it over the extended glove of Dartmouth goalie Christine Honor (31 saves) at 13:37 of the final period.

Harvard goalie Beth Larcom stopped all 28 shots she faced.

Dartmouth will take three weeks away from the ice to celebrate the holidays before returning to Thompson on New Year’s Eve to host UConn and close the first half of the season.

Men’s Squash

Harvard 9, Dartmouth 0

Hanover — Tenth-ranked Dartmouth (3-1) was shut out by No. 2 Harvard (1-0) its first home game of the season.

On Saturday, Dartmouth will travel to Massachusetts and Vermont for games at Williams and Middlebury respectively.

Harvard 8, Dartmouth 1

Hanover — Freshman Ellie Gozigan accounted for No. 10 Dartmouth’s lone win against (1-0). The Buig Green (2-1) faces Williams and Middlebury on Saturday.

Men’s Soccer

Big Green Named All-Region

Kansas City, Mo. — Dartmouth’s Matt Danilack, Wyatt Omsberg and Eduvie Ikoba were named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men’s All-East team on Wednesday.

Danilack and Omsberg were named to the first team, while Ikoba was named to the second team.

Campbell 52, Mascoma 24

West Canaan — Shorthanded Mascoma had to settle for several forfeit victories in its season opener.

“We have a really young team,” Royals coach Rick Simula said. “We’ve still got some guys trying to make weight and coming back from injury, so we don’t quite have a full team yet.”

Simula praised the efforts of freshmen Cam Stebbins (106 pounds) and Brian Lowell (113), who lost on points.

Next for Mascoma is Saturday’s Bronco Invitational at Alvirne High.

Newport 48, Kearsarge 12

Newport — Six Tigers earned victories on the mat as Newport opened the season with a win over Kearsarge.

Jordan Warburton (120), Garrett Harold (126), Marius Edwards (132 pounds), Josh Sharron (138), Dylan Palmer (160) and Gavin Lovely (182) all won for the Tigers, who also won three matches by forfeit.

“It always feels good to start the season with a solid win,” Newport coach Cole Boone said in an email. “We matched up well against Kearsarge, and I was pleased with the guys who stepped up when we bumped them to different weight classes. Josh Sharron and Garrett Harold had tough matches that resulted in two close decisions in our favor.”

Newport will compete in the Con-Val Early Bird Tournament on Saturday.

Boys Basketball

KUA 78, Phillips Exeter 49

Exeter, n.h. — Nick Timberlake scored 37 points as Kimball Union (4-0) spoiled Exeter’s home opener.

Timberlake went 8-for-10 from beyond the 3-point line for the Wildcats, who were 18-for-26 from the floor in the first half and shot 60 percent from the field for the night.

KUA travels to Babson College this weekend for two games, playing Blair Academy on Saturday and Phillips Andover on Sunday.

Boys Hockey

KUA 7, Proctor Academy 4

Meriden — Logan Cash scored two goals as Kimball Union defeated Proctor Academy.

Kyle Penney, Bryce Dolan, Arlo Merritt, Tomas Mazura and Sullivan Mack also scored for the Wildcats, who host Brewester on Friday.

Sean Dynan earned the win in net.
