Hanover — Hanover police are warning the community of an email scam that is targeting businesses.

The hackers have been creating email addresses that match someone within the organization and seek a payment.

“In many cases, the emails are so convincing that the well-intentioned recipient will send the money without hesitation,” Hanover Police Chief Charlie Dennis wrote in a news release today. “These hackers are doing their homework on organizations they are targeting.”

Be wary of all emails seeking money or personal information. Before sending out that information, call or send a separate email to the sender to verify the original email’s authenticity, the release states.
