Dartmouth, 7-2 overall and 4-2 in Ivy play, piled up 421 yards of offense while allowing just 264. Sophomore receiver Hunter Hagdorn enjoyed the first two-touchdown game of his career, and the Big Green kept alive its hopes for its 19th Ivy title. Princeton visits Memorial Field next Saturday for the teams’ season finale, when everyone involved hopes for warmer weather.
“I still have lock jaw,” joked Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens, whose program improved to 6-1 at Fenway, with three victories there over Brown. “But the offense executed for all four quarters for the first time all year. It was critical to set an early tone.”
An announced crowd of 12,297 saw Dartmouth open the scoring with five minutes remaining in the first quarter by driving 51 yards in seven plays and three minutes. The Big Green scored when Hagdorn caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Jack Heneghan. David Smith’s extra-point attempt was blocked.
Dartmouth pushed its lead to 13-0 with four minutes gone in the second quarter. Ryder Stone’s 10-yard run and Smith’s extra point capped an 11-play, 90-yard drive that consumed five minutes.
Brown (2-7, 0-6) ruined Dartmouth’s attempt at back-to-back shutouts by kicking a 27-yard field goal with five minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Big Green all but finished the game early when it drove 77 yards in seven plays and went up, 19-3, on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Heneghan to Hagdorn. Smith added the extra point and then booted a 28-yard field goal as the half expired for a 23-3 advantage.
Dartmouth’s Jarius Brown intercepted a T.J. Linta pass and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown five minutes into the second half. Brown scored on a run with seven minutes remaining, snapping the Big Green’s seven-quarter shutout streak.
Heneghan completed 21 of 31 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns and had one toss intercepted. Hagdorn caught four passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns, and Drew Estrada had six receptions for 57 yards. Stone carried 16 times for 63 yards and a touchdown.
“The results weren’t what we wanted, but it was an incredible atmosphere to be a part of,” Brown coach Phil Estes said. “We haven’t had a rhythm all year, and we didn’t settle into one tonight. We seem to find a way to shoot ourselves in the foot.
“It’s been a struggle and it’s too bad, because we’re better than what we’ve shown.”
Notes: Brown sports information director Chris Humm said that more than 16,000 tickets were sold for the game, with more than 3,000 no-shows. … Backup quarterback Jake Pallotta got in the game with seven minutes to play. … Friday’s result was the seventh time in last eight years the designated host team has lost. … Dartmouth offensive lineman Justin Call used crutches to walk across the field and off at one end of the first-base dugout during the third quarter. … Big Green coaches and staff members wore the same caps used by the Dartmouth baseball team, which feature an old English D on the front. … Baseball coach Bob Whalen attended the game and said dozens of his former players also were at Fenway. … The second quarter took an hour to play. … Dartmouth marching band members standing on the back of the third-base end zone and waiting for their chance to take the field at halftime danced a jig to stay warm. … Dartmouth shut out Cornell last week, and the last time it shut out back-to-back opponents was with Boston University and Yale in 1977. … The last time the Big Green played in front of a crowd announced at 15,000 or more was at Yale in 2011. … Dartmouth athletic director Harry Sheehy sat in the outside portion of a private box above the third-base dugout for much of the first half. … Maine and UMass face off in football today at Fenway. Next weekend, it’s UConn and Boston College and a pair of high school games. … Estes said he didn’t feel cold until the last 50 seconds. “It was more the cold reality of the situation,” he said.
