Rhode Island’s Diann Uustal, competing in the women’s 70-74 age group, clocked a time of 3 minutes, 4.82 seconds in the 200-meter backstroke to beat the world record by four-tenths of a second and the national mark by nearly eight full seconds.
Swimmers also knocked off eight New England regional times at the meet. New London’s Arnold Meardon, a member of the center’s UV Rays masters swim team, set a pair of new marks in the men’s 85-89 division, recording a time of 44.05 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 1:49.10 in the 100 free. Both previous recorded had been on the books since 2000.
The UVRays also countributed four of the many meet marks that fell on Saturday. Sean Uiterwyk earned fastest-swimmer-of-the-week honors with a 12.45 second time in the 25 free among men 40-44. Rob Starkey timed 1:10.15 in the 100 butterfly to set the meet record in the same men’s division.
Jeff Kuvin (men 50-54) broke the meet record in the 200 freestyle with a tiem of 2:13.16. UVRays coach Barbara Hummel also set a new standard among women 65-69 with a 47.41 in the 50 breaststroke.
TA’s McPhailThird at States

McPhial placed third overall in the boys race, posting a time of 10 minutes, 29 seconds over the three-kilometer course. Sixth-grader Finn O’Donnell was next for Thetford, taking 71st in 12:22. Danny Wolstenholme (12:46), Noah Branchflower (13:20), Nate Neubauer (14:30) and Ben Perron (16:10)) also ran for TA, which finished 14th as a team.
Seventh-grander Emma Powers topped the Theford girls, placing 10th in 12:11, a time that was also second in her grade. Madi Powers was close behind in 14th (12:28). Ruby Cole (12:59), Annie Hesser (14:21), Abby Egner (14:27), Shannon O’Donnell (14:51), Mary Bosco, 15:02), Lily Terry (17:22), Louise Downey (18:40), Maddy Thaxton (21:49) and Acadia Cook (23:18) also ran for TA, which finished eighth.
Hartford’s Sophie Trombley claimed a top-20 spot in the girls race, taking 18th in 12:33. Emma Wiederspan had Woodstock’s best result, a 33rd-place time of 12:45.
Woodstock’s Nixon Malik (55th, 12:01) and Hartford’s Colby Boyce (71st, 12:21) had the best times for their respective boys teams.
Woodstock Squirts Sweep

Defenseman Sarah Lackley had a pair of goals for Woodstock, which also picked up a score from Chase Gravelle. Coates was denied on his initial breakaway try but converted the rebound for the win. Goalie Dominic Palazzo made 24 saves.
The Wasps headed home to Union Arena on Sunday and took an 8-1 win over the Rutland Spartans. Beck Welch moved up from the blue line to produce a four-goal first period. Aidan Milone also had a hat trick. Palazzo needed just eight saves for the victory and the weekend sweep.
Small Games Camp

The camp is open to girls and boys in grades 9-12 and is geared toward preparing for the upcoming high school hockey season. Goldsworthy will oversee girls clinics from 2:45-3:45 p.m. each day, with Bebeau taking over with the boys from 4-5 p.m. Skaters will focus on creativity, excelling in small spaces, individual skills and team play.
The cost of the camp is $65 for Hartford residents and $80 for all others.

Hartford Preseason Camps

Boys and girls in grades 3-5 will meet on Nov. 6, 8 and 10, with the girls playing from 4:30-6 p.m. and the boys following from 6:15-7:45 p.m. Grades 6-8 are set for Nov. 7, 9 and 11; the girls go from 4:30-6 p.m. the first two days and 9-10:30 a.m. the third. The boys are 6:15-7:45 p.m. on Nov. 7 and 9 and 10:45 a.m. to noon on Nov. 11. The cost of both camps is $40 for Hartford residents and $55 for nonresidents.
Landon and Guerin will also hold a preseason high school camp on Nov. 13-15 for grades 9-12. The girls meet 4:30-6 p.m. each day, the boys from 6-7:30 p.m. The high school camp is $55 for Hartford residents and $70 for nonresidents. All camps will take place at Hartford High School.

Fire Blows Away Valeo

Murphy Hunt got the scoring started with a first-half blast from 18 yards set up by Daniel Mladek and Zane Schiffman. Seth Carl added a cushion with a goal after halftime, also hitting from long distance.
With Connor Mahlin, Palmer Okai, Jack McGrath, Wyatt Napier and Jack Ross limiting Valeo’s offensive opportunities, goalkeeper Jack Maynes recorded another shutout for the Fire. LSC finishes its fall campaign in Byfield, Mass., this weekend with a visit to GPS North Shore.
Surge Nips Stark

Ainsley Smith and Karley Hollis both had near-miss opportunities to score in the first half, but would take until the final minute for the match to be decided. Hollis played a midfield pass to Malia Pratt, who broke from the JSU defense and fired home the game’s only goal.
The Surge closes its season against Bow Soccer Club this weekend.

LSC had no trouble with wet conditions, rolling up and down the field all match long. The win completed a 4-2-1 fall schedule.

Yuvraj Sathe helped the Canes shake off a slow start with a hat trick in a 7-3 win over the Aztec U9 Eqrthquakes. Sacha Palm also scored to help the Canes take a 4-1 halftime lead. Colin McLaughlin scored twice after the break, with Palm adding his second of the match as well.
With Connor Fox in net and defenders Nolan Bourn and Nathaniel McFetridge commanding the back line, the Canes beat Bruno United, 7-3, to cap the season. Sathe and Drake Johnson both had two goals, with one each from Palm, McLaughlin and Matt Lepene.
