Windsor, VT —
He was born on Aug. 4, 1931, in Hanover, N.H., the son of Harry L. and Margaret (Relihan) Magoon. He grew up in Wells River, Vt., and Woodsville, N.H. He was a graduate of Woodsville High School in 1949. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Plymouth Teachers College and his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from UNH.
He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955 with the Occupational Forces in Salzburg, Austria in the offices of the Judge Advocate.
He married Joan Landers on Aug. 18, 1963.
He taught English at Stevens High School for 36 years, retiring in 1991 as Chairman of the English and Music Departments.
He also directed the Stevens High School chorus and acapella choir for 18 years.
His love of teaching and his devotion to his students was reflected in the many thank you letters he received over the years from former students.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and had served on the vestry and sang in the choir.
He was an honorary member of the Stevens High School Alumni Association. He served for several years on the Board of Directors for the New England Association of Teachers, the New Hampshire Teachers of English Association, the New Hampshire Retired Educators Association, the Claremont Opera House, serving as secretary for several years, the Fiske Free Library, the United Way of Sullivan County and the Claremont Housing Authority. He was past president of the Sullivan County Retired Educators Association.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan Magoon; one son, Paul J. Magoon and his wife, Kristina; his grandchildren, Matthew and Megan Magoon all of Colorado Springs, Colo.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Claremont, with Rev. Janet Lombardo officiating.
