Claremont — Ron Gilbert has had an interest in cars for most of his life. In 1972, he co-founded the Yesteryears Motorcar Club.

In 2012, he and his wife, combined their love of vintage cars with their interest in helping an organization that’s near and dear to them: the Claremont Senior Center.

This year’s car show will be held next Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m., at the center at 135 Maple Ave. Cars can enter for $10, spectators pay $5 and children under 12 are free.

“It’s been growing every year,” Gilbert, 75, of Claremont, said.

The show includes food available for purchase, door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and a professional DJ.

In 2012, 80 cars attended. Last year, there were more than 200.

“We never did expect it (to get) that big,” Gilbert said. “It’s getting very big and we’re very pleased with it.”

Last year’s show brought in about $7,000. Proceeds benefit the senior center.

Car owners do not need to register ahead of time. There are 10 classes of vehicles, with the “rat rod” class new this year. In past years, the classics category has drawn the most participants.

About 75 volunteers assist with the show, including helping to park all the vehicles as they arrive.

“Our judging is done by spectators,” Gilbert said. “None of it is done by judges.”

Each class has a first-, second- and third-place winner.

There are also awards for best in show, oldest vehicle and for traveling the greatest distance to get to the show.

“(We) had one car from Maine and another from Connecticut that came just for the show last year,” Gilbert said.

While Gilbert will bring his own vehicle — a 1932 Dodge Brothers pickup truck — he will not enter it into the contest. His favorite part of the day is “the camaraderie amongst the seniors and senior center,” he said.

For volunteers, participants and attendees, “it’s a day of fun,” Gilbert said.
