Walpole, n.h. — Pitcher Duncan MacDonald surrendered just one earned run over eight innings of work, getting 14 hits in support to lead the Connecticut River Ironmen to an 8-6 win over the Walpole Wild Blue and the championship of the Connecticut River Valley Baseball League on Sunday at Hubbard Field.

Returning to the CVRBL after six seasons in the Green Mountain Baseball League, the Ironmen recorded a 2-1 win over the Walpole Maples and a 10-8 decision in 10 innings over the Putney Fossils to make the final. MacDonald struck out six, walked two and allowed 11 hits for the win, while Kris Keelty earned the save in the ninth inning with a strikeout and game-ending double play.

Joey Fenuncio led the offense with three hits, one run and one RBI. Brady Boisvert went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair, Nick Vorvis doubled twice on a three-hit day, and MacDonald aided his own cause with three RBIs. Jake Davis and Brenden Mayhew also offered 2-for-4 efforts for the Ironmen.

The CVRBL is a wooden-bat adult baseball league for players ages 19 and over (ages 28 and over for pitchers). This summer’s roster included players from Norwich, Canaan, Enfield, Lebanon, Woodstock, Hartofrd, Hartland, Hanover and Windsor.

Sharon Sibs at AAU Finals

Ypsilanti, Mich. — Sharon siblings Jack and Wynter Simack represented their Tromnadoes youth track and field program at the AAU Junior Olympics last week at Eastern Michigan University.

Both Simacks produced podium-worthy results with top-eight finishes. Jack tossed personal bests in the shot put (33 feet, 0.25 inches) and the javelin (124-5), taking sixth among 14-year-old boys to make the medal stand.

Wynter threw a PR in the turbojav (88-2) to take seventh among 12-year-old girls to also make the podium. Wynter placed seventh in the same event at last year’s AAU Junior Olympics in Houston.

The Tromnadoes consist of nine athlete ages 8 to 15 from Sharon, Hartford and Springfield, Vt. Contact coach Linda Trombley at scarlettrose91@aol.com to learn more.

Pickleball Party

New London — Players both experienced and new are invited to a free afternoon of pickleball on the New London Outing Club tennis courts on Aug. 20 from 3-5 p.m.

The event will be held rain or shine, moving to the New London Middle School gym in case of inclement weather. All ages are welcome to join; a court will be reserved for those learning the pingpong-tennis hybrid game for the first time.

Sprouty Run Set

Sharon — Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to join in the annual Sprouty, a 10K and 5K road race, on Sept. 9 at Sharon Elementary School.

The race starts at 9 a.m. and costs $20 for the 10K and $15 for the 5K (prices increase after Aug. 24). Commemorative T-shirts go to the first 150 registrants through Sept. 2. A free kids fun run is set for 10:15 a.m. Refreshments and music will be part of the day along with awards for the top three men and women in both races.
