Orford
As part of the self-guided tour at least seven local farms will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“I think it’s a great way for people to see the diverse agriculture landscape that we have,” said Erik Volk, executive director of the Cohase Chamber. “It’s a nice way to connect with the folks who make this area a beautiful place. Oftentimes we drive by and see pastoral farmland, and this event gives people the chance to get to know the folks that make that a reality.”
A variety of farms are participating in the event.
Tullando Farm in Orford is home to more than 1,000 cows and uses advanced technology, such as robotic milking, which visitors will be able to see in person during the tour.
Cottonstone Farm, a smaller operation in Orford, is focused on growing fresh flowers.
“That’s neat because it’s a little bit different,” Volk said.
Taken all together, the farms on the tour provide a glimpse into the agriculture community in the Upper Valley and the Cohase region in particular.
“It’s really just about giving a collection of farms that people can visit in the day to see the diversity of agriculture,” Volk said. “People tend to think of farms one way.”
Emily Gray, who owns Tullando Farm with her brother and parents, said her family likes showing the public what happens at their dairy operation.
In addition to tours of the barn, visitors will be able to see calves and even try a bit of ice cream when they stop by the farm.
“We love to do anything to get the community together,” she said.
More information on the tour is available the Cohase Chamber’s website, www.cohase.org.
