Local Roundup: Temple, Lyford Advance at Vermont Amateur

Dorset, Vt. — One Hartford High graduate posted one of the best rounds of the day. Another improved enough to make the cut on the number.

Zach Temple and Mak Lyford have 36 more holes of golf to play at the Vermont Amateur today.

The one-time Hurricane teammates both advanced on Wednesday among the 40 players to meet or exceed the 36-hole cut of 15-over-par 155 at the Dorset Field Club. Temple shot a 2-under 70 and is tied for sixth at 1-over 141. Lyford shaved a stroke off his first-round score and slipped inside the cut line late in the day, his 155 (78-77) was good enough to guarantee one more day on Dorset’s lush fairways and potato chip-shaped greens.

Temple, a recent Castleton University graduate, was one of just seven golfers to break par on Wednesday. He was at his best on Dorset’s front nine, erasing an early bogey with birdies on 4, 7 and 8 and playing even-par golf on the back side.

Lyford, a senior-to-be at UVM who plays on the Catamounts’ club golf team, needed to improve on Tuesday’s 8-over 78 to have a hope of making his first Vermont Am cut. He did, surviving two front-nine double bogeys with his first two birdies of the tournament, on the par-4 ninth and 13th holes.

Rivendell Academy graduate Ryan Landgraf narrowly missed joining them in his first state am, missing the cut by a stroke (80-76). Woodstock’s Justen Maxham and Alex Moore, Quechee’s Dustin Perry and Montague’s Bob Moreau also missed the cut.

Only St. Johnsbury’s Alex Rainville shot better than Temple on Wednesday, producing 4-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead at 7-under 133. Two teenagers, Rutland High’s Jared Nelson and Montpelier High’s Bryson Richards, are on his tail, Nelson by one stroke (66-68) and Richards by three (68-68). Former Rutland High standout Drake Hull shares third place with Richards at 4-under 136.

Rutland’s Garren Poirier is the only other golfer below par through two days, sitting in solo fifth at 3-under 137 (69-68).

The tournament concludes with 36 holes today to determine the state champion.

Hunnewell, Pleat Advance

Keene, n.h. — Carter Country Club’s Andy Hunnewell and Dartmouth College graduate James Pleat played their way to victories in the first two rounds of match play in the New Hampshire Amateur at Bretwood Golf Course on Wednesday.

Hunnewell, the 11th seed in the 64-player match ladder, picked up a pair of 2-and-1 wins, beating Profile’s Sam Natti in the first round and Loudon’s Travis Landry in the second. Pleat, looking to make his deepest state am run since a semifinal appearance at his home Nashua Country Club in 2011, was a 6-and-5 winner over clubmate Bryce Zimmerman in the opening round before earning a 4-and-2 decision over Green Meadow’s Josh Kibbe.

Survivors face one match today. Pleat takes on Rochester’s Jamie Ferullo at 7:48 a.m., while Hunnewell follows right behind against Brett Wilson from the Golf Club of New England. Should Pleat and Hunnewell both win, they’d face each other in Friday morning’s quarterfinals.

Hanover’s Sylvain Foster, the sole remaining Upper Valley golfer in the field, fell in the first round to Ridgewood’s Jim Cilley, 1 up.

Randolph, Vt. — White River Junction Post 84 scored seven runs in the first four innings to overpower Randolph Post 9 and improve to 12-3.

Post 84 starter Walker Farley gave up three runs, three walks, five hits and hit two batters in the first two innings. Jordy Allard entered the game in the third and settled things down, striking out four in the next two innings. Tyler Hamilton finished the game, giving up one hit, one walk and two strikeouts in the final three.

Post 84’s offense scored three runs in the second inning before breaking through with four runs in the fourth. It added an insurance run in the fifth and another four in the sixth inning to close out the game.

Jacob Perkins led the way with three hits. Brady Clark was 2-for-4, Austin Gaudette was 2-for-3 and Hamilton was 2-for-4.

Post 84 will host Randolph on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Maxfield Sports Complex in the third meeting between the two squads in as many days.

Meriden — Touchline V scored two goals in the final 12 minutes to secure a tie with Lebanon Top Stitch, and Lebanon Central Supply swept the season series against Touchline Boys SC in a New Hampshire Summer Soccer Conference doubleheader at the Plainfield School.

In the opener, Tyler St. Martin, Tommy Berthasavage and Jorgen Leuthauser each found the back of the net for Top Stitch (1-4-1). Thor Dyxenbug made six saves.

Touchline’s Amane Matsuoka scored twice and Matteo Gallino scored once; Peter Burnham and Archer Judd provided assists. David Enelow made six saves for Touchline (5-2-2).

In the later Division IV matchup, Central Supply scored twice on penalty kicks, both from Luke Sandmann, en route to the victory. Owen Johnstone and Noah Spaulding also scored for Central Supply, which improved to 4-1.

Johnstone opened the scoring in the eighth minute, heading home an indirect kick from Mack Walton. Sandmann’s first penalty kick came four minutes later. Central Supply took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Anthony Stoffel made six saves for Touchline Boys SC (3-3), which got goals from Bauti Gallino and Sawyer Hanlon.

Gallino’s goal came in the first half, an upper-corner blast in the 34th minute. Hanlon scored with one second remaining in the second half following a corner kick.

Central Supply’s Davis Cole made five saves.

Touchline V hosts Upper Valley United on Saturday, while Touchline Boys SC hosts Bedford today. Central Supply visits CRFC Claremont IV on Sunday, with Lebanon Top Stitch following against CRFC Claremont V.
