The spring season certainly didn’t lack for action involving former Upper Valley high school athletes. Here’s a look:
Baseball
Holy Cross was 24-29 but won the Patriot League and upset No. 25 Nebraska before bowing out in the NCAA tournament. Senior pitcher Joe Cravero (Hanover) was 3-4 with a 4.67 ERA and started 11 times during his 16 appearances on the mound. He started against the Cornhuskers, allowing five hits and two runs in four innings. … Junior pitcher Jack Weinberger (Sunapee) appeared in 12 games for Springfield (Mass.) College as a reliever, going 0-2 with a 4.11 ERA. The Pride was 15-14. … New Hampshire Technical Institute was 7-17 with freshman infielder and pitcher Cole Cruz (Sunapee), freshman catcher Jeff Quimby (Claremont/Newport) and sophomore first baseman and pitcher Walt Hammond (Canaan/Mascoma) on the roster. Cruz batted .167 in five games, Quimby batted .189 in 21 games and Hammond batted .176 in 11 games. … Lyndon State (22-20) enjoyed the services of freshmen outfielders Codi Smith (Hartford) and Jake Perkins (Hartford). Smith batted .303 with 13 RBIs in 37 games and Perkins batted .238 in 30 contests. Each pitched two innings. … Matt Whalen (Hanover) appeared in six games for Bowdoin (15-18).
Softball
Freshman outfielder Alexis Madore (South Royalton) batted .098 in 20 games for Lyndon State (0-22). She also started twice during five pitching appearances, finishing with a 16.50 ERA. … Senior catcher Chrissy Drake (Lebanon) started 29 of the 30 games in which she played for Nichols and batted .295 with 13 RBIs for the Bison (16-16). … Johnson State (4-18) used sophomore pitcher Kaitlynn Woodward (White River Junction/Hartford) and junior infielder Kasie Craig (Oxbow). Woodward started 12 of the 14 games in which she hurled, going 2-9 with a 4.22 ERA. Craig appeared in 21 games and batted .093.
Men’s Lacrosse
Skidmore was 6-9 with sophomore attackman Conor Austin (Norwich/Hanover) appearing in eight games and producing one goal and two assists. Sophomore attackman Eric Megnia (KUA) had five goals and five assists while starting eight of the 14 contests in which he saw action. … St. Lawrence (16-3) was the Liberty League runner-up and won an NCAA Division III tournament game with senior Ryan Brigham (Norwich/Hanover) as its main faceoff man. He won 59 percent of his draws, appeared in every game and had two goals. Classmate and midfielder Andrew Jarrett (KUA) started all 18 games in which he played, producing 28 goals and 10 assists. Sophomore defender Owen Marley (KUA) was also on the Saints’ roster. … Junior goaltender Rick Kronenwett (KUA) started two of the nine games in which he appeared for Nazareth (N.Y.) College (11-9). He was 0-1 with a .574 save percentage and an 11.26 GAA. … Australian native Kenny Speak (KUA) was a sophomore attackman at Endicott (Mass.) College, for which he appeared in nine games and had two goals and three assists. The Gulls were 10-8. … Sophomore defenseman Joe Grout (Plainfield/Lebanon) was on the roster for Post (Conn.) University (5-8). … Ed Doton (Barnard/Woodstock) played defense for Castleton (10-9), starting all 16 games in which he played and scooping 30 ground balls. … Freshman attackman George Geraghty (Norwich/Hanover) was on the roster at Saint Anselm (8-6). … Johnson State (0-10) featured sophomore midfielder Austin Walters (Grantham/Lebanon) and freshman midfielder Hayden Tomlinson (Bradford/Oxbow). Walters appeared in one game and Tomlinson played in every contest, starting seven times and earning an assist. … Junior defenseman Chris Anderson (KUA) started 15 of the 16 games he played for Beloit (Wis.) College (10-6). He had one goal. … Nichols (10-8) featured senior midfielder Paul Tessier (KUA). Tessier played in each contest, posting 19 goals and nine assists. … Christian Wolter (Norwich/Hanover) was a senior defensive midfielder for Michigan (8-6) and saw action in all 16 games, earning the team’s Unsung Hero award and scoring his first career goal. … Norwich was 10-9 with senior midfielder Joe Wood (White River Junction/Hartford) playing in every game and producing a goal and eight assists. … Rensselaer (10-5) had junior midfielder and co-captain Oliver Kaija (Woodstock) start all 14 games in which he played, producing three goals and an assist and winning 52 percent of his faceoffs as the Engineers’ main man on draws. … Wesleyan was 20-2 and lost in the NCAA Division III semifinals with junior midfielder Andrew Huizenga (Norwich/Hanover) on the roster. … Curry (Mass.) College was 10-9 with junior defenseman Jack Boillotat (Hanover) starting 16 of the 18 games in which played and scooping up 28 ground balls.
Women’s Lacrosse
Freshman attacker Mary Grace Sedero (Lebanon) had a goal and an assist for Colby-Sawyer (10-7) while appearing in seven games. … Bowdoin was 10-6 with sophomore midfielder Sophie Lubrano (Hanover) producing two goals and two assists in 15 games. Freshman defender Elle Brine (Lebanon) appeared in six games. … Sophomore defender Kyra Taylor (Meriden/Lebanon) started 17 of 18 games in which she played for New England College (10-8). … Junior attacker Storm Sideleau (KUA) started 15 times in 15 appearances for Vassar (8-7) and had 27 goals and five assists, good for third on the team in scoring. … Sophomore defender Joanna Schafer (Meriden/KUA) appeared in two games for Bates (7-8). … Four area athletes, juniors Ashley Fogg (White River Junction/Hartford) and Tegan Pellerin (Thetford) and freshmen Kelsey Fogg (Hartford) and Kaila Lemmer (Barnard/Woodstock), endured an 0-11 season at Johnson State, which allowed at least 13 goals in every outing and 20 or more in six. Pellerin, a midfielder, tied for third on the team in scoring with two assists and started all seven games in which she played, something Ashley Fogg, an attacker, also did while producing one assist. Kelsey Fogg started the one game in which she appeared. Lemmer, a midfielder, started all 10 contests in which she played. … Colby (15-4) featured senior defender Georgia Lubrano (Hanover) and senior midfielder Gemma Bready (Kearsarge), who each started every game. The Mules won their third NESCAC title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament. Bready had 14 goals and four assists. … Middlebury (16-5) lost in an NCAA Division III regional final with junior defender Evie Keating (Hanover) starting all 20 games in which she played. … Georgetown (9-9) had junior midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover) start seven times in 18 appearances and produce 17 goals and 11 assists. … Esme Cole (White River Junction/Hartford) played in eight games and had two goals for Kenyon (Ohio) College (7-9), for which she was a sophomore midfielder. … Williams went 4-10 and junior midfielder Kate Pattison (Hanover) started 13 of 14 games in which she appeared and had a goal. … Senior attacker Hannah Lyons (Norwich/Hanover) helped Colorado College finish 15-5 and win an NCAA Division III tournament game. She played in 19 contests and had eight goals and an assist. … Freshman midfielder Brenna Peterson (Lebanon) helped Gordon (Mass.) College go 9-9, starting 14 of the 17 games in which she played and scoring once.
Men’s Track
Freshman Liam Fleming (Orford/Rivendell) won the North Atlantic Conference meet’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:43.86. Teammate and classmate Ben Jones (Enfield/Mascoma) was third in the 1,500 (4:24.69) and fifth in the 5,000 (16:00.52). Another freshman, Justin Whittaker (Bridgewater/Woodstock), was sixth in the 1,500 (4:38.78) and seventh in the 800 (2:14.25). The Chargers won the seven-team event. … Sophomore Cole Chapman (Post Mills/Thetford) competed in one outdoor meet this spring for Southern Connecticut, failing to finish the 400-meter hurdles. … Junior high jumper Kevin Pomer (Grantham/Lebanon) set a personal best of 40 feet, 7 inches in the triple jump for Ithaca (N.Y.) College and finished eighth in the event at the Empire 8 Conference championships. … Franklin Pierce junior Martin Gradijan (Lebanon) posted personal bests in three events this spring. They were the 1,500 meters (4:08.36), the 5,000 meters (15:58.61) and the 10,000 meters (32:36.55). The Ravens were second out of 11 teams at the Northeast 10 Conference championships. … Richard Bradley (Lyme) was a senior javelin thrower at Harvard who produced a personal best with a throw of 193-11. The Crimson was sixth at the eight-team Ivy League Championships for a second consecutive year. … Castleton sophomore Clayton Bailey (North Hartland/Hartford) threw the javelin a career-best 151-7 this spring. Classmate Jackson Dwyer (Quechee/Hartford) set career bests in the hammer (117-3), discus (125-0) and javelin (140-2). Another Spartan sophomore, Tayler Larmie (Wilder/Hartford) unleashed his best-ever hammer toss (136-0), winning the event at the NAC championships, where Castleton finished fourth out of seven schools.
Women’s Track
Earlham (Ind.) College junior Annalee Wilson (Lyme/Hanover) earned honorable mention All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference after finishing third in the pole vault at the conference meet with a mark of 10 feet, 1½ inches. The Quakers finished sixth out of 10 teams. … Aparna Alavilli (Hanover), a junior at Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University, was eighth in the University Athletic Association’s 5,000 meters at 17:44.14. The Tartans finished seventh out of 10 schools. … Charleston Southern freshman Megan Newton (Hartford) was 11th in the javelin at the Big South Conference meet with a throw of 103-2. Her team was fourth out of eight schools. … Johnson State finished third out of six teams at the NAC meet. Sophomore Lily Denmeade (Quechee/Woodstock) posted career bests in the 400 (1:10.09), the 800 (3:00.56) and the 1,500 (6:07.37). … Dartmouth senior Moriah Morton (Lebanon) placed fourth (136-3) in the javelin at the Ivy League’s outdoor championships. Dartmouth finished fifth in the eight-team competition for a second consecutive year. Morton threw a career-best 149-9 a week later at the NEICAAA championships. … Wheaton (Mass.) College finished third out of nine teams in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference meet. Senior Kelly Ludew (Lebanon) was fifth in the 100 hurdles at 15.83. The Lyons’ 4×400 meter relay team was third in 4:06.79 with Ludew on it. … Vermont was sixth out of nine teams at the America East Conference meet. Junior Margaret Gish (Sharon/Sharon Academy) ran a personal best in the 10,000 meters (39:46.20) at that meet. Earlier in the season, she turned in her top times in the 1,500 (5:11.25) and the 5,000 (18:48.87). … Brown senior Safiya Walker (Hanover) delivered a personal best in the 400 hurdles (1:06.87) this spring. … Bates was second out of 11 teams at the NESCAC meet with senior Elyse Rubchinuk (Newport). She was 11th in the javelin (109-10), 13th in the shot put (32-3) and 18th in the high jump (4-8.25)… Crista Hargbol (Sunapee) was a senior sprinter at UNH who ran 18.88 in the 100 hurdles and 1:09.83 in the 400 hurdles this spring. … Kayla Gould (Orford/Thetford Academy), a Plymouth State sophomore pole vaulter, cleared 8 feet, 0.5 inches at the New England Alliance championships. She was 14th out of 16 competitors, and the Panthers were 11th out of 12 teams. … Taylor Downs (West Lebanon/Lebanon) a junior at Southern Maine, ran 16.25 seconds in the 100 meters and 33.92 in the 200 and 1:27.24 in the 400 for the Huskies.
Crew
Columbia freshman Patrick Dyroff (Hanover) competed in six races and the Eastern Sprints championships. He rowed in the Lions’ third varsity boat. … Junior Claire Callahan (Norwich/Hanover) rowed in the varsity eight for Hamilton (N.Y.) College, which finished 10th (7:06.23) out of 19 teams in the top varsity standings at the National Invitational Men’s and Women’s Rowing Championships in Worcester, Mass. That meet doubled as the NESCAC championships, and the Continentals were fifth out of seven conference schools. … Senior Dan Seaman (Claremont/Stevens) competed in the third varsity eight for Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute. The boat was third at the NIMWRC in 6:13.101. … Sophomore Ben Lynch (Lyme/Hanover) competed for Wesleyan’s varsity eight, which finished second out of six teams in the NIMWRC’s petite final in 6:13.112. … Seniors Emily Muller (Norwich/Hanover) and Sophie Bartels (Hanover) competed for Colby. Muller was part of the varsity eight that finished 11th overall at the NIMWRC in 7:11.251.
Other Sports
Maggie Kinder (Woodsville) competed in a regional equestrian competition in April for Colby-Sawyer. She is a sophomore in advanced Walk-Trot-Canter. … Trinity (Conn.) College junior Nate Choukas (Hanover) helped the Trinity Bantams tie for second at the four-team NESCAC Championships. He tied for sixth among 20 individual competitors, the second consecutive season he’s finished in that slot. … Zach Temple (Hartland/Hartford) was a senior golfer at Castleton who finished second out of 40 competitors at the NAC championship. He was three strokes over par and had seven birdies during his two rounds, the second-highest in the field. Castleton finished fourth out of eight teams. … St. Lawrence tennis sophomore Carly Jefferson (Sunapee/KUA) was 7-9 in singles play and 8-3 in doubles. The Saints were 10-10.
