West Fairlee
West Fairlee Assistant Fire Chief Lisa Ordway said Randy Bishop, who did not require medical treatment, reported having just awakened when he noticed the fire.
Crews from Vershire, Thetford, Fairlee, Bradford, Orford and Hanover joined West Fairlee’s six firefighters in the effort to douse the blaze, to which dispatchers were alerted at 7:41 a.m. The American Red Cross arranged a temporary place for Bishop and his dog to stay.
“It’s been quite a while since we had a structure fire that extensive,” Ordway said late Saturday afternoon. “At least eight or nine years.”
Investigators from the Vermont Division of Fire Safety started sifting through the debris late in the morning and early in the afternoon, after coming from a fire in northern Vermont, Ordway said. “They said they’d be there for several hours.”
On its Facebook page, the Hanover Regional Communications Center reported that fire departments from Chelsea, Norwich, Wentworth, N.H., and Corinth provided mutual-aid coverage at neighboring towns’ fire stations that sent crews.
