Claremont — The Lebanon Youth Baseball U12 all-stars swept a two-game series from Claremont over the weekend to advance to the New Hampshire Cal Ripken 60-foot state championship next month.

In games played at Monadnock Park, rolled to an 18-2 win on Saturday and a 10-1 decision on Sunday. Despite the defeats, Claremont also advanced to the state tournament because of Lebanon’s status as host.

On Saturday, Lebanon blew open a close game early on a towering homer from Sawyer Weale. Lebanon added rfiv runs in the third, one in the fourth and 10 in the sixth to win going away. Weale, Ben Howland and Bodie Benoit had multiple hits, and Sam Bates and Weale both scored three runs. Lebanon split the pitching between Dawson Bates, Sam Bates, Weale and Dominik Petkus, holding Claremont to four hits with six combined strikeouts.

Claremont again scored early in Sunday’s rematch but couldn’t build on it. Sam Bates got out of trouble by striking out a Claremont batter with the bases loaded. A two-run Weale single in the first put Lebanon ahead to stay, with a seven-run second sealing the deal. Howland, Dawson Bates and Domineaq Taylor limited Claremont to five hits over the final five innings, striking out seven.

Lebanon plays a tournament in Stratham, N.H., this weekend, then returns home to host the state finals the week of July 1-8.

Hawks Win Title

Grantham — The Grantham Hawks held off a bases-loaded rally in the final inning to top New London, 7-4, to win the minors/U10 championship of the Kearsarge Valley Cal Ripken Baseball League for the first time since 2007.

The Hawks got off to a quick start, scoring three times in the first inning on back-to-back RBI hits from Palme Susco and Colby Leonard. New London rallied for 4-3 lead through three, but a four-run fifth put Grantham up for good.

Ian Manfred started the rally with a walk, and Reed Ferland singled to produce insurance runs. Ben Britton tossed a pair of strikeouts in the final inning to get out of the late jam, aided by a John Murphy snag of a pop-up behind the plate. Murphy (eight strikeouts) and Simon Nowlan also took turns on the mound. Nowlan, Murphy and Jonathon Cooper also had hits.

Josh Garcia, Ollis Mermanson, Chris Kinne, Gavin Meier, Dylan Moore and Omar Osman also contributed to the title-winning effort.
