Thetford — The Sayres Covered Bridge on Tucker Hill Road last Thursday sustained damage from a vehicle that was too tall to enter the structure, police said.

The vehicle broke and dislodged boards on the bridge, but does not appear to have caused structural damage, according to Thetford Police Chief Michael Evans. The damage was more severe on the south end of the bridge.

Although someone picked up the broken boards and stacked them on a guardrail, no one has come forward to claim responsibility for the damage, Evans said.

The guardrail was put in place after a vehicle several years ago drove through the bridge and into the river, Evans said in an interview Wednesday. The police chief asked anyone who can provide more information about this incident to contact him by email at michael.evans@vermont.gov or by phone at 802-785-2200.
