Hanover — A call for submissions for this year’s 55+ Art Show at Howe Library attracted even more interest than usual.

Almost three dozen artists are represented in the exhibit, which features recent work by amateur artists age 55 and older. That’s an increase over previous years, “which is awesome,” said Megan Coleman, the Howe’s programming coordinator and outreach and PR librarian.

Most of the 65 or so pieces are paintings, but the display in the library’s Ledyard Gallery also includes mixed media, drawings and a photograph. The artists include a core group who participate every year, and others who are new to the show, Coleman said.

Susan Johnson, of Hartford, said she’s been fortunate enough to have had artwork included “maybe four or five times.”

Showing at the library is “very rewarding,” said Johnson, a retired chiropractor who favors painting and mixed media. “They make it very easy,” she said, and she’s met some nice artists through the event.

Having a show on the horizon has a practical benefit, too. “It gets you organized,” she said.

The 31st annual show includes After Hopper’s First Branch of the White River, Vermont, a painting Johnson made on repurposed wood. “I like to do a lot of recycled stuff,” she said.

The exhibit will be on display through Wednesday, and can be viewed during regular library hours. The Howe will be closed Sunday and Monday for Memorial Day.
