Salisbury, Vt. — A 33-year-old Springfield, Vt., man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash last month on Route 7, according to a State Police news release issued today.

Authorities say Shawn Newell was driving northbound around 6:40 a.m. on April 20 in Salisbury “at a high rate of speed, passing slower moving vehicles that were ahead of him.” When he tried to pass a vehicle ahead of him, he drove into the path of an oncoming car, the release said.

Both drivers swerved into the breakdown lane and had a head-on collision, the release said.

A passenger in the other car, 40-year-old Brian Kerr, of Ripton, Vt., was killed in the crash. Newell was cited with gross negligent operation of a motor vehicle with death resulting and is due in Addison District Court on June 5 to answer to the charge, the release said.
