West Danville, Vt. — It’s officially spring in northern Vermont. The ice is out on Joe’s Pond in West Danville.
Each year, people pay $1 to guess the day and time when a 65-pound cinder block will fall through the melting ice, a competition that dates to 1988.
This year the block fell through the ice on Sunday at 4:32 p.m.
WCAX-TV reports Emily Wiggett of North Danville had the closest guess, at just one minute off. She wins $4,600. The rest of the raffle ticket sales money goes to pay for the annual Joe’s Pond fireworks display on Fourth of July.
