West Lebanon, N.H. — Shirley Blanchard Krug, of West Lebanon, passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at the age of 94. She was the daughter of the late Carleton W. Blanchard and Violet Ferrell Blanchard, formerly of North Haven, Conn. She was the sister of the late Virginia B Perkins, formerly of Granby, Mass. and of Dudley F Blanchard, of Harwich, Mass. She was born on Dec. 12, 1922, in Newport News, Va., and grew up in Spring Glen, Conn.

She graduated from the Day School in New Haven, Conn. and continued her education at Skidmore College. After graduating, she taught Phy.Ed. at Smith College where she met her husband, Charles T Krug, visiting from Dartmouth College. They were married in September 1948 and moved to Rowayton, Conn. where they had two daughters, Susanne and Betsey, and later to Mt. Carmel, Conn.

She taught Phys. Ed at Day Prospect Hill School and later became the director of admissions there. She was on the board of the Peabody Museum of Natural History and the New Haven Ballet.

She is survived by her two daughters and their spouses: Susanne and Robert Smart and Betsey and Randy Niebuhr; and by her grandchildren, Charles, Thomas, and James Smart and Jessica Niebuhr, Katie Cohen and Anna Krewson. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Jace Benjamin, Griffin and Padraig Smart, and Orly Cohen; and by her brother, Dudley F. Blanchard.

She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. We will remember her strength, her great kindness and beauty, her positive outlook and love and interest in life, of people and learning.

There will be a private family memorial service held in her honor this summer.
