St. Louis — A day later, after he was hit by a ball practically all the way around the bases, Stephen Piscotty was feeling fine.

The Cardinals outfielder was struck three times during a body-pounding fifth inning. First, he was plunked on the arm by a pitch from Jake Arrieta. He then stole second and paid for it, struck on the other arm on a throw from catcher Wilson Contreras.

“I’ve never seen that before,” Piscotty said Wednesday. “Crazy.”

The worst soon followed on his slide home during Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. He was hit in the head on a throw by second baseman Javier Baez while scoring on an infield hit by Kolten Wong.

Piscotty was not in the lineup for Wednesday’s series finale, which was postponed because of rain and will be played this afternoon.

Mattingly: I’ve Talked toJeter About Ownership

Washington — Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly says Derek Jeter, his successor as captain of the New York Yankees, has “always talked about” owning a major league team one day.

Mattingly was asked before Miami’s game at the Washington Nationals on Wednesday about a report on FoxBusiness.com that said Jeter and former Florida governor Jeb Bush were among those who could try to buy the Marlins from Jeffrey Loria.

Marlins president David Samson said in February that multiple groups were interested in purchasing the club. Mattingly said he is “sure” Jeter would be a good owner, because he “pretty much seems to be good at everything that he tries to do.”

“He’s always talked about it,” Mattingly said. “I asked if he wanted to coach, and he’s like, ‘Never.’ ”

The two were briefly Yankees teammates in 1995, Mattingly’s last season in the majors and Jeter’s first, and Mattingly went on to coach New York during Jeter’s stay.

Mattingly said they speak about once a year.

A’s John Axford goes on disabled list with shoulder injury

Eds: APNewsNow.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Athletics reliever John Axford was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday retroactive to Sunday with a strained right shoulder.

The right-hander experienced tightness after throwing a curveball warming up Tuesday night and didn’t enter the game against the Angels.

He was undergoing an MRI exam Wednesday. Manager Bob Melvin said Axford had no issues leading up to the injury.

“None, zero,” Melvin said. “It was a complete surprise not only to us but to him.”

Right-hander Jesse Hahn was recalled from Triple-A Nashville and will provide length out of the bullpen.

Oakland has six players on the DL after needing it an Oakland-record 27 times last season. The A’s have had at least three players on the disabled list every day since July 30, 2011, and not fewer than two since ending the 2006 season with one.
