Miami — Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was the “probable” operator of a speeding boat that crashed into a Miami Beach jetty on Sept. 25, killing the baseball star and two other men, according to a report issued Thursday by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which investigated the accident.

The 46-page report included a seating chart that had Fernandez at the helm, based on “physical evidence” collected during the investigation, including the pitcher’s fingerprints and DNA on the steering wheel and throttle and projection of his body as he was thrown from the boat. It also listed drugs and alcohol as factors in the crash.

Fernandez’s 32-foot Sea Vee hit Miami’s Government Cut north jetty at 65.7 mph just after 3 a.m. on Sept. 25, the report said. Fernandez and the boat’s other occupants — Emilio Jesus Macias, 27, and Eduardo Rivero, 25 — were ejected.

Investigators concluded that had Fernandez survived the crash, he could have been charged with multiple crimes, including boating under the influence manslaughter; vessel homicide; and reckless or careless operation of a vessel.

The report describes how officials were not able to identified Fernandez by his driver’s license photo because of face trauma. They searched the internet for photos of Fernandez’s tattoo, which had a baseball surround by gears, to identify him. They also found a Major League Baseball identification card inside his wallet.

Weirather Takes Super-G Title

Aspen, Colo. — Tina Weirather, of Liechtenstein, turned in a smooth run to win a World Cup race Thursday at World Cup Finals and overtake Slovenia’s Ilka Stuhec for the super-G crown.

Stuhec’s flickering overall title hopes remained mathematically afloat. She trails Mikaela Shiffrin by 198 points with two races left. Stuhec would need to win both events and have Shiffrin score virtually no points. Shiffrin is close to joining esteemed company in Phil Mahre, Tamara McKinney, Bode Miller and Lindsey Vonn as the only Americans to win the overall crown.

Hannes Reichelt of Austria used a smooth run to win the super-G at World Cup Finals on a challenging course that saw quite a few racers fail to finish.

Reichelt navigated the tricky course in 1 minute, 8.22 seconds on Thursday to beat Dominik Paris of Italy by 0.11 seconds. Swiss skier Mauro Caviezel and Norway’s Aleksander Aamodt Kilde tied for third.

The Americans will skip the team event at World Cup Finals today with not enough technical skiers to compete.

The U.S. boasts one of the top tech racers in the world in Shiffrin, but each nation enters three men and three women. Some of the country’s slalom and giant slalom racers are competing at NorAm Cup Finals in Quebec.

Indiana Fires Coach

Bloomington, Ind. — Indiana coach Tom Crean was fired after nine often lackluster seasons.

Athletic director Fred Glass announced the decision Thursday as the NCAA Tournament was beginning.

Crean won two Big Ten regular-season championships over the last five seasons, but went 18-16 this year and missed the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in nine years — including each of his first three seasons after taking over a gutted team following an NCAA scandal.

The 50-year-old Crean went 166-135 at Indiana overall.

Despite being ranked No. 1 for most of the 2012-13 season, his teams never advanced beyond the Sweet 16. And this season, one year after a surprising Big Ten title run, the Hoosiers again fell flat.

The Hoosiers lost their best defender, OG Anunoby, to a season-ending knee injury and their top scorer, James Blackmon Jr., for three games with a leg injury.
