Pat Hackett, who opened Hattie’s Kitchen last Memorial Day, said in an email over the weekend that she isn’t doing enough business to stay afloat for much longer.
“We are really struggling,” she wrote in an email on Saturday. “I know people don’t like to get out this time of year, but unless they come in soon, I’ll have to shut down.”
Should Hattie’s Kitchen close, Hackett’s would become the fourth eatery to open and close in the space, which is on the first floor of a building owned by the Masons in South Strafford village on Route 132, since the 1990s.
In interviews in the fall, proprietors of the previous restaurants that occupied the space pointed to challenges such as finding a price point and menu to suit a variety of tastes. They also said determining the appropriate staffing level can be tricky. Strafford’s population is just over 1,000.
Even so, in interviews in the fall, Hackett and members of the community said there was a desire for a neighborhood spot to have a bite and visit with friends.
