Brownsville — A fire Sunday night that gutted an old farmhouse on Route 44 was caused by an electrical problem, state fire investigators said today.

The fire at 283 Route 44 — a farmhouse that dated to 1826 — “most likely started from a damaged service entrance cable,” according to a news release from the Vermont Division of Fire Safety’s fire investigation unit.

A tenant was home at the time, and nobody was injured in the blaze.

The news release said the house is believed to be a total loss, and had an estimated value of $300,000.
