The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forward Brian Boyle in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday.

Tampa Bay gets a 2017 second-round pick and minor league forward Byron Froese for Boyle. The teams announced the deal about 47 hours prior to the NHLโ€™s trade deadline.

Boyle, 32, is a pending unrestricted free agent. He has 13 goals and nine assists in 54 games this season. In 603 NHL games with the Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers and Lightning, Boyle has 93 goals and 73 assists.

The native of Hingham, Mass., is a defensive-minded forward who can win faceoffs and give Toronto depth down the middle beyond Auston Matthews, Nazem Kadri and Tyler Bozak. The trade signals more selling for Tampa Bay, which sent goaltender Ben Bishop to the Kings on Sunday.

Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said earlier Monday that he still hoped to make the playoffs. Theyโ€™re seven points behind the Maple Leafs, who hold the second and final Eastern Conference wild-card spot.

Boyle has appeared in 100 playoff games. He brings veteran leadership to a young Maple Leafs team that is trying to make the playoffs for the first time since 2013.

Stars, Canadiens Swap Blueliners

Dallas โ€” The Dallas Stars have acquired defenseman Greg Pateryn and a 2017 fourth-round pick from the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Jordie Benn.

The 26-year-old Pateryn missed time this season with an ankle injury and has appeared in just 24 games, putting up a goal and six assists. He was used sparingly by the Canadiens even after the recent coaching change from Michel Therrien to Claude Julien.

The 29-year-old Benn has two goals and 13 assists in 58 games this season. Heโ€™s the brother of Stars captain Jamie Benn and is signed for two more seasons at a salary-cap hit of $1.1 million.

Canucks Ship Burrows

Vancouver, British Columbia โ€” The Ottawa Senators are gearing up for a push to the postseason, acquiring forward Alex Burrows from Vancouver for prospect Jonathan Dahlen.

The trade gives the Senators a skilled pest with plenty of playoff experience at forward.

Burrows, 35, has played 822 regular-season games with the Canucks, with 193 goals, 191 assists and 1,066 penalty minutes. He has added 19 goals and 15 assists in 70 playoff games.

He had four straight seasons of at least 25 goals from 2008-09 to 2011-12 playing largely with the Sedin twins.

Arizona Adds Pulkkinen

Glendale, Ariz. โ€” The Arizona Coyotes have acquired forward Teemu Pulkkinen from the Minnesota Wild for future considerations.

The 25-year-old Pulkkinen had a goal in nine games with the Wild this season. He also had 18 goals and 18 assists with the Iowa Wild, earning a spot in the 2017 AHL All-Star Game.

Pulkkinen was originally taken in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL draft by the Detroit Red Wings, and has 12 goals with nine assists in 79 career NHL games.
