London — Dignified and charming to the end, Claudio Ranieri broke his silence after his firing from Leicester by saying that winning the Premier League at the unfashionable club will make him “smile every day.”

Ranieri, however, also said that his “dream died” when he was told by Leicester’s board on Thursday that he was no longer manager of the team he guided to the title at odds of 5,000-1 last season.

There was no anger in the 65-year-old Italian’s first public words since his dismissal, just pride at his achievements and sadness that the fairytale success story was abruptly ending.

“After the euphoria of last season and being crowned Premier League champions, all I dreamt of was staying with Leicester City, the club I love, for always,” Ranieri said. “Sadly this was not to be.”

Ranieri said his adventure at Leicester would “live with me forever” and made an emotional tribute to the club’s supporters.

Ranieri was fired with Leicester one point and one place above the relegation zone after 25 games of a woeful title defense.

Arrest of Pele’s Son Sought

Rio de Janeiro — A Brazilian court has requested the arrest of Pele’s son, Edson Cholbi do Nascimento, for association to drug trafficking and money laundering.

Edinho, as the son of the former footballer is known, had yet to be arrested after Friday’s ruling. The Sao Paulo state court decided that Edinho’s previous sentence of 33 years in jail should be reduced to 12 years.

Edinho played for years as a goalkeeper at Santos, his father’s former club. He retired in 1999.

The former goalkeeper was sentenced for the first time in 2014, but was appealing the decision. Despite the risk of imminent arrest, Edinho coached two small teams in Sao Paulo state.

Pele has not made any comments about his son’s arrest.

U.S. Sets Women’s Tourney Roster

Chicago — Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan are among 23 players named to the U.S. national team’s roster for the SheBelieves Cup tournament next month.

Coach Jill Ellis drew the players for the roster from a pre-tournament training camp. The event, which will include Germany, France and England playing in three double headers across three cities, opens Wednesday in Chester, Pa.

Megan Rapinoe was not among the players invited to camp as she continues to regain form following knee surgery. Meghan Klingenberg, who participated in camp but is still recovering from a back injury, and Amy Rodriguez, coming off the birth of her second child, were also left off the roster.

Brianna Pinto, who is just 16, is among three players on the roster who have never made an appearance with the national team.

Lloyd, Morgan and Crystal Dunn will break from playing with their European club teams for the tournament.
