North Conway, n.h. — Sabin Mitchell’s first season as a ski jumper is ending on a high note. Mitchell capped her debut campaign by claiming an individual state championship on Friday night in the New Hampshire state championship meet, hosted by Kennett High School.

Mitchell, a freshman new to ski jumping this season, took the top spot with a combined point total of 96.5. Points are awarded for total distance jumped and style. Marauders senior Anna Dickson was third overall with 87 points, followed by classmate Ruby Spitz in fourth with 83.5 points.

“It was a very impressive competition,” Hanover coach Tom Dodds said. “She and Anna have been trading the top spot for the girls all season. The two of them have been skiing really well.”

The Hanover boys took second as a team, led by a second-place finish by senior Sam Strohbehn with a point total of 120.5. Kennett’s Sean Maloney won the individual state title with 123 points.

“Sam and Sean together have been setting the standard all season. Tonight was even closer than the score indicates; it could have gone either way,” Dodds said. “It’s so gratifying to see Sam jumping as well as he’s been jumping. He’s been one of our leaders and as a senior this may be the last ski jumping he does.”

Hanover placed all four of its scoring jumpers in the top 11. Sawyer Hanlon added a seventh-place showing with 112 points.

Nathan Winter was eighth with 109 points and Jasper Meyer took 11th with 107.5. Seniors Dimitri Somoff (15th) and Griffin Johnson (17th) also had strong showings in their final high school jumps.

“We were aspiring to go up there and win. We felt like we had a team that could compete with anyone. I’m proud of our team and the way we’ve been skiing,” Dodds said.

Freshman Cameron Summerton led the Sunapee boys in 15th place with 104 points. Lane Smith was 21st and Parker Reed was 23rd for the Lakers.
