Grafton, N.H. — Paul Clarence Gove, 92, of Grafton died peacefully at the VA Hospital in White River Jct., Vt., following a short stay at DHMC and complications from pneumonia on Saturday evening, Feb. 4, 2017.

Born on June 16, 1924, to Clarence Garfield and Martha (Dean) Gove of Wilmot, N.H., where he spent his entire childhood years before joining the U.S. Army at the age of 19. Paul served in WW II and received the purple heart. After discharge from the army he spent time working at Ruggles Mine, on the Town of Grafton road crew, logging with his beloved horses in the White Mountains, and as a carpenter for Trumbull-Nelson in Hanover and for himself. After marrying his beloved wife, Mary (Daniels) of Canaan, they built their home and settled in Grafton, and lived there for over 60 years. Paul was one of the founding members of the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department and served as chief for over 40 years. He also served as a N.H. State Forest Fire Warden, Commander of the American Legion Post #97 and was a member of the N.H. State Grange, Eureka Grange and Montcalm Grange.

He was predeceased by his parents and nine siblings, Lawrence, Ralph, Leonard, Leslie, George, Clarence Jr., Charlotte, Nellie and Dorothy (Gove) Connolly.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mary, currently at Hanover Terrace; his son, Paul Alan Gove and wife, Cynthia of Enfield; his daughter, Barbara Belloir and husband, Douglas of West Canaan; three granddaughters, Cheryl (Gove) Tourville and husband Edmund of Canaan, Jill (Gove) Feen and husband Geoffrey of Lebanon, Cassie (Belloir) Johns and husband Aaron of Dorchester; and three great-grandsons; Matthew and Timmy Tourville and Dylan Johns. Along with many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, Feb. 11 from 1 pm to 3 p.m. at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main Street, New London, N.H. Burial will take place in the spring.
