Hartford Hires New Coach
Heather Scudder will return to her second stint at the helm of Hartford High field hockey next season, according to a release by the Hurricanes athletic department on Friday afternoon.
“Coach Scudder’s excitement to come back to coach the team, her knowledge of the sport, her connections with the players and her impressive track record at Hartford High stood out during the process,” said Hartford athletic director Jeff Moreno in the news release. “She is very excited to begin forming player-coach relationships with the girls.”
Scudder stepped down as coach of the Hartford field hockey team in 2014 after 28 years with the team with a 305-92-56 overall record, a stretch of 13 consecutive years in the VPA Division II semifinals, 16 trips to the VPA championships and 11 state titles. Heath Haskell took over for Scudder in 2015 and went 16-9-2, reaching only the D-II quarterfinals in 2015 before he was told his annual contract would not be renewed.
Hartford lost six players to graduation after the 2016 season, including starting goalkeeper Rachel Loseby and playmaker Brooke Hurd. Kennedy Mullen (seven goals, three assists), Emma Libbey (seven goals) and Morgan Pero (five goals, one assist) are all expected to return next season.
