South Royalton — Mikayla DeBois erupted for 18 points to spark the Rivendell Academy girls basketball team to a 43-26 victory Friday at South Royalton.

DeBois drained three of the Royals’ six 3-pointers while adding eight rebounds. Riley Thomson had 11 points and Laura Rutherford had six. Mikayla Stever had four points, eight rebounds and five assists. Rivendell played strong defensively in the early going as it built a 28-11 halftime lead.

The Raptors showed improvement over recent struggles from the free-throw line, shooting 7-for-14 Friday. Rivendell shot just 5-for-16 during Wednesday’s 34-31 loss at Craftsbury.

The Royals’ Grace Pease led all scorers with 20 points.

“Pease did a really good job on the boards,” Rivendell coach Hank Tenney said. “We didn’t have an answer for her.”

Rivendell (8-3) hosts Blue Mountain tonight at 7 p.m. in a makeup game. South Royalton (5-7) hosts Twinfield on Tuesday night.

Lebanon 47, Bishop Brady 31

Concord — Freshman Rebecca Wright led the Raiders with 20 points and 10 rebounds as Lebanon continued its undefeated streak in NHIAA Division II. 

“She’s having a monster season,” said Lebanon coach Tim Kehoe.

Joslin Wainwright had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Maddie Hastings had seven points and 12 rebounds. Bishop Brady was credited with only four offensive rebounds.

“We dominated inside, dominated the boards,” Kehoe said. “We rebounded the ball extremely well.”

Lebanon (13-1 overall, 11-0 league) hosts Hanover on Tuesday.

Whitchester 54Sharon 49 (2OT)

Rochester, Vt. — Sharon’s Mallory Lloyd had her best game of the season, scoring 27 points to help the Phoenix erase a eight-point halftime deficit. Whitchester’s Brianna Hillier was the hero in extra time, scoring four of her 10 points in the second overtime period.

Eliza Masteller scored six of Sharon’s 17 points during the third quarter to help launch the comeback. She finished with eight points.

“It was a great effort, just to give ourselves a chance,” said Sharon coach Gregg Nalatte. “We just couldn’t get over that little hump.”

Hayley Mears led the Mountaineers with 16 points. Sammy Barcomb and Laura Vaillancourt had 10 points each. Whitchester (4-10) travel to West Rutland on Feb. 11.

Sharon (3-8) hosts Williamstown on Tuesday.

MVCS 56, Black River 20

Quechee — Eagles Rachel Seale and Sydney Goodwin combined for 38 points.

“We played really good defense out of the gate,” said Mid Vermont coach Chris Goodwin. 

Danyelle Goodwin added 11 points and Emily Jasmin netted seven. Mid Vermont (6-4) travels to Chelsea on Tuesday.

Mount Royal 33Wilton-Lyndeborough 16

Sunapee — Sophie LaRose had a break-out game with 15 points with Jacinta Hogan out sick and Alexis Matte dealing with an ankle injury. Mount Royal improved to 6-7.

Matte had nine points and Marylin LaRose had five. Mount Royal broke out with 21 points in the second half.

Sunapee 81, Nute 30

Sunapee — Sydney Clark scored 19 points, Katie Frederick had 17 and Faith Larpenter added 15 as the Lakers (15-0 overall, 13-0 league) coasted.

Lakers coach Tim LaTorra praised the work of point guard Meg Frederick.

“She’s helped make our offense flow,” LaTorra said. “Her contributions don’t necessarily show up on a box score, but without her doing what she does, our shooters can’t be in a position to score.”

Woodsville 48, Profile 31

Woodsville — The Engineers (9-6) pulled away in the fourth quarter with a 20-2 run.

Lily Kinder and Molly Clough combined to go 10-for-12 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Kinder had 17 points. Clough added 12 and McKenzie Dennis had eight points.

Belmont 47, Mascoma 25

Belmont, n.h. — The Royals fell behind, 19-7, after the first quarter and couldn’t recover, dropping to 4-11.

Kayla Hammond and Michaela Dowd each scored six points. The Royals host Newport on Tuesday.

Hanover 46, Bow 39

Bow, n.h. — Freshman Maddie McCorkle had 13 points to pace Hanover (11-4 overall, 10-2 NHIAA). Julia Golder chipped in 11 points and 13 rebounds. Bella Bardales added 10 points along with 14 rebounds. Diana Schwarz also had 10 points for the Marauders, who won their eighth consecutive game.

“It was a physical game, very back-and-forth,” Hanover coach Dan O’Rourke said. “They controlled the tempo on us, but we were able to make shots when we needed to.”

The Marauders visit Lebanon on Tuesday.

Newport 47, Franklin 31

Newport — Alexis Hurd had 13 points and Selena Coronis had 12 points for Newport, which improved to 607. Alyssa Burr added nine points and Anna Pysz had six. The Tigers built a 28-17 lead at halftime.

Vt. Academy 65, KUA 48

Rockingham, Vt. — Taylor Soule crossed the 1,000 point mark for her high school career and finished with 15 points for the Wildcats.

Soule, a Boston College commit, added 14 rebounds, six steals and five assists. Christina Ryan had 15 points and six rebounds for KUA.

Boys Basketball

Lebanon 63, Bishop Brady 47

Lebanon — The Raiders (11-1 overall, 8-1 NHIAA) led, 17-6, after the first quarter.

Graham Chickering had 14 points and a strong effort on the glass while also defending Bishop Brady star Bryce Johnson. Ryan Milliken had 15 points and Chris Nulty added 14. Paul Slabinski came off the bench to drain a 3-pointer at the close of the first quarter and finished with six points.

The Raiders host Hanover on Tuesday.

Mascoma 58, Belmont 52

West Canaan — Devin Duhaime had 20 points, 18 of them from beyond the 3-point arc, and the Royals held off tall, physical Belmont.

“They’re a very good team,” Mascoma coach Jim Barry said. “We just tried to lock them down defensively and maintain offensively. Alex (Schwarz) carried us, as usual. But Devin Duhaime really showed what he is capable of.

Schwarz had 11 rebounds and six assists on top of his game-high 23 points. The Royals (7-5) travel to Newport on Tuesday.

Stevens 55Hillsboro Deering 23

Hillsboro, n.h. — The Cardinals built a 28-9 lead at halftime, with Zach O’Brien producing 10 points and 19 rebounds. Noah Spaulding had 13 points and Parker Smith added 11 points. The Cardinals (10-2) visit Fall Mountain on Tuesday.

Sunapee 61, Nute 50

Sunapee — Five Lakers scored eight or more points, including Nick Ducharme, who had 12. Isaiah Gorman and Sean Shisko each added 10 points.

Matthew Nangeroni and Austin LeBlanc had eight points each for the Lakers (3-9, who visit Newport on Monday.

Windsor 66, Green Mtn. 46

Windsor — Adam Stapleton led Windsor (5-8) with 13 points. Ben Meagher added 12, Robert Slocum had 11 and Duncan Frazer finished with eight points. The Jacks extended a 15-point halftime lead with a 23-9 run in the third quarter.

Windsor visits Springfield on Monday.

Woodsville 52, Profile 48

Woodsville — The Engineers used a 9-0 run in the final 75 seconds to steal a victory over the visiting Patriots.

Cooper Davidson and Sam Pushee each had 18 points to pace the Woodsville offense. Garrett Olsen added 11 points. The Engineers trailed, 48-43, in the final minutes before Davidson helped spark the rally with a pair of buckets and a pair of free throws to close it out.

Woodsville hosts Canaan-Pittsburg on Friday night.

Fair Haven 63, Hartford 54

White River Junction — The Hurricanes (4-7) did their best to keep pace but costly turnovers were their demise.

“We played with hard, positive energy,” said Hartford head coach Steve Landon. “Both teams played hard. The gym was packed. I haven’t seen such positive energy. … It was a really good basketball game.”

Gavin Farnsworth put up 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Keith Illingworth and Hunter Perkins each scored eight. But Hartford’s turnovers, which Landon said were in double digits by the end of the game, gave Fair Haven too many easy baskets.

“You can’t do that against teams like that,” he said.

Black River 51, MVCS 46

Quechee — The Eagles missed its free throws late, finishing the game 16-for-32 from the line.

Jake Roberts and Josh King led the offense with 12 points each and Dylan Patel added 10 points. Mid Vermont led 27-22 at halftime, but were outscored 29-19 in the second half.

The Eagles (1-10) travel to Christ School today.

Wilton-Lyndeborough 72 Mount Royal 62

Sunapee — Trey Carrier had 32 points to lead the Warriors over the Knights (5-9).

Andrew Normandin made four 3-pointers on his way to 28 points Mount Royal. Gus LaRose added 14 and Alex Normandin had 12 points. The Warriors took control in the middle two quarters, outscoring the Knights 43-26.

Mount Royal visits Pittsfield on Monday.

Boys Hockey

KUA 2, Holderness 1

Plymouth, n.h. — The Wildcats got a shorthanded goal and a strong effort by goalie Huge Turcotte to beat the Bulls.

KUA broke through first when blueliner Alex Heinritz got possession while on the penalty kill in the second period. Heinritz found Sean Thomson, who fed Mike Lombardi for the go-ahead goal. Holderness would tie it up minutes later but Paul McAuliffe answered with what turned out to be the game-winning goal for KUA.

Field Hockey

Hartford Hires New Coach

Heather Scudder will return to her second stint at the helm of Hartford High field hockey next season, according to a release by the Hurricanes athletic department on Friday afternoon.

“Coach Scudder’s excitement to come back to coach the team, her knowledge of the sport, her connections with the players and her impressive track record at Hartford High stood out during the process,” said Hartford athletic director Jeff Moreno in the news release. “She is very excited to begin forming player-coach relationships with the girls.”

Scudder stepped down as coach of the Hartford field hockey team in 2014 after 28 years with the team with a 305-92-56 overall record, a stretch of 13 consecutive years in the VPA Division II semifinals, 16 trips to the VPA championships and 11 state titles. Heath Haskell took over for Scudder in 2015 and went 16-9-2, reaching only the D-II quarterfinals in 2015 before he was told his annual contract would not be renewed.

Hartford lost six players to graduation after the 2016 season, including starting goalkeeper Rachel Loseby and playmaker Brooke Hurd. Kennedy Mullen (seven goals, three assists), Emma Libbey (seven goals) and Morgan Pero (five goals, one assist) are all expected to return next season.
