Matthew Martin will spend 15 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, according to a news release issued by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Judge J. Gavin Murtha imposed the sentence in a Brattleboro, Vt., courthouse on Tuesday.
Martin took a plea agreement in October and pleaded guilty to robbing six banks, a gas station and a pharmacy. The sentence length and restitution amount of $25,514 were part of the October agreement.
Formal acceptance of the deal was deferred until Tuesday’s sentencing hearing.
Murtha said the court rarely sees sentences of this length, but noted the circumstances of the case warranted the sanction, according to the release.
