He was born Oct. 20, 1940 in Wilder, Vt. Following graduation Robert took classes on agriculture at the Vermont Tech in Randolph, Vt. He always loved the outdoors, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting and four wheeling. His close friends were Charlie Hale, Wayne Talbert, Fred Hammond and Louie Boyles. They were always in for a good time. He married Dorothy Oakes-Schmitt on July 31, 1962, and together they had two sons. In 1966 Robert started his own rubbish and recycle business. When his son John got older and was able to help more he eventually took over the family business in 1985.
Robert was predeceased by his mother, Nelly and father, Francis (Red) Oakes, and brothers David and Paul Oakes.
He is survived by his two sons, Robert and John Oakes, Dottie Oakes-Schmitt; grandchildren Jennifer Labbie, Brittany Mather, Bobby Oakes, Dylan Oakes and JT Mathers; great-granddaughters, Madison and Brenna Labbie and Grace Stark; his brothers, Francis and Thomas Oakes; and sister, Pam Weaver; and many nieces and nephews.
