Windsor — Windsor High freshman Olivia Rockwood will probably not be able to take many uncontested 3-pointers the rest of the season after what she did to Mount St. Joseph on Tuesday night.

Given relatively free reign, the 15-year-old nailed seven 3-pointers on a season-best 29-point night as the Yellowjackets handed two-time defending Vermont Division IV champion MSJ a 48-36 setback in a Marble Valley League girls basketball contest.

Even MSJ coach Dan Elliott was impressed.

“She’s the real deal, and she can create her own shots,” he said.

Rockwood, who said she goes to three or four basketball camps per summer, thought it was perhaps the best game she had played in her young life.

“I was surprised to see how many uncontested shots I had,” she said.

Rockwood’s effort was needed because fellow guard Ashleay Wilcox had four fouls by the 4:26 mark of the second quarter and did not return until the fourth period.

It was the first loss of the season for MSJ, which lost only to Proctor during the regular season last year before going on to the title.

Rockwood’s big period was the second, when she scored 14 points while hitting a trio of 3-pointers, including one at the buzzer.

“You know what’s best about her?” said her Windsor coach, Bruce Mackay. “As good as she is at playing basketball, she’s even a better kid.”

While the spotlight was on Rockwood, she’s wasn’t the whole show, as Mackay pointed out the work of Anika Abrahamsen and Kaycee Herschel as vital.

“We really needed them tonight,” Mackay said. “They plugged up everything down low.”

The 12-point difference was not totally indicative as to what took place. The score was 13-13 after one quarter before the Rockwood explosion in the second quarter propelled Windsor into a 30-23 lead at the half. Jenna Eaton had a nice second period for the Mounties, scoring nine of her team’s 10 points.

MSJ hung tough through three periods. The Mounties fell behind, 35-25, at one point, but they went on a 7-2 run to close the quarter down by just five points, at 37-32. But a four-point fourth quarter sent them home on the short end of the score.

“I didn’t see this coming,” said Elliott. “We didn’t answer the bell. I glad we only play them once.”

Windsor is now 7-1. While the win was impressive, there were areas that Mackay would like to see improvement.

“Our zone (defense) was much better than our man, and we didn’t pass as well as we should,” he said.

Windsor is home to Newport on Friday. MSJ goes to Arlington on Thursday.
