A Career Ends in Plainfield

All is merry and bright — well, not so much in Plainfield. The Plainfield Library “system” has chosen to not renew the associate librarian position after Dec. 31.

The air in the celebratory balloons had not even had time to escape after the grand opening of the Philip Read Memorial Library basement completion (Nov. 6) and the naming of the Special Collections Room honoring Nancy Norwalk, when a special meeting was called by the Library Board of Trustees. They voted not to “renew” her contract.

Nancy Norwalk has spent 40 years as a dedicated librarian; worked tirelessly to lead fundraising efforts (over $1 million dollars) to save Plainfield taxpayers’ dollars for the expansion of the library; has been very active with the Maxfield Parrish stage restoration and preservation effort; co-editor of PlainFacts; and on and on. Nancy has “given her all” to the town. Saturday is her last day at the library. Please stop by to let her know that her efforts for the last 40 years are appreciated. Thank you, Nancy.

Bonnie Swift Plainfield Effective Alcoholism Treatment

In answer to Sydney Lea’s Forum letter regarding The Sinclair Method (“Don’t Overlook 12-Step Success,” Dec. 10), it isn’t self-assurance that makes me speak freely of this new treatment for alcohol use disorder, but the words “evidence-based medicine” and “multiple double-blind studies” showing a 78 percent long-term success rate.

We know for certain that scientific research is key to understanding disease and how a cure becomes a reality. The Sinclair Method has 40 years of science behind it and 15 years of successful treatments in Finland for tens of thousands of people who suffered with this disorder of the brain’s neurobiology.

Alcohol use disorder has nothing to do with one’s morality or defects of character. (These two steps of AA should be jettisoned.) Naltrexone, the medication used in the Sinclair Method, gained FDA approval for treating alcohol cravings in 1994.

I am not denigrating AA. If this has worked for you, then you are good to go. But for all who tried AA without success, please go to contralnewengland.com to see how science has provided a treatment that works long-term in 78 people out of 100. If you need a fellowship, by all means attend AA too, but do not be shamed into silence about your disease anymore.

Jackie Smith SunapeeMistrusting Donald Trump

Though I cannot prove it, I believe Donald Trump got elected because he cheated on the election. A billionaire with connections all over the world could do this easily.

People who are disgusted and/or frightened by Trump have good reason to be. Besides being ungodly and racist, I believe he is extremely dishonest.

His campaign platform seemed great for the common people: stopping the outsourcing of jobs, deporting illegal aliens and limiting trade. America has needed this for decades. I believe his promises are bait. When you voted for Trump, you only were seeing the surface.

I believe that everything our country is founded on is at threat now, including our personal freedoms. Once he is in office, the other countries he buddied up with could take control. Sounds fantastic, but you are only seeing the tip of the iceberg. The border could be closed both ways.

I am chilled to the bone after reading about the coming Antichrist in prophecy.

Help Support the Skate Park

As we approach the end of 2016, please help us with your tax-deductible donation to The Rusty Berrings Skate Park in memory of Tyler S. Kirschner. The skate park is located at the Riverside Community Park in West Lebanon.

With the help of our neighbors, friends, organizations and businesses, in partnership with the city of Lebanon Recreation and Parks Department and the Friends of Lebanon Recreation and Parks, we hope to see the revitalized skate park become a vital resource for the Upper Valley and beyond. Please join us in building safer and more permanent concrete ramps for a skate park that continues to serve young people throughout the region.

We have raised more than $125,000 toward our goal of $350,000 needed to complete the project, which we hope will occur by October 2017. Please plan a visit to the park, located on the Glen Road. For more information contact Lebanon Recreation and Parks at 603-448-5121. You can send a contribution to Friends of Lebanon Recreation and Parks, P.O. Box 369, Lebanon, NH 03766. It is registered as a nonprofit public charity.
