Quechee — Mid Vermont Christian School girls basketball coach Chris Goodwin hopes it doesn’t happen often. But as occurred during Monday night’s game against South Royalton, Goodwin’s Eagles had to figure out what to do when their key scorer, Rachel Seale, fouls out.

With out Seale’s scoring, MVCS buckled down on defense and made an eight-point lead after three quarters hold up in a 21-20 decision over the Royals that left both teams at 1-2 on the young season.

Seale (game-high seven points) fouled out with three minutes to play. Mid Vermont didn’t score the rest of the way, netting only a Seale basket for fourth-quarter offense.

It’s the defense that saved the day.

“I thought we had it pretty much done until the last three minutes,” Goodwin confessed. “They scored a couple of baskets in the half-court, and we didn’t play good help defense. But once we got our act together, we did much better with our defense. I don’t think they scored in the last two minutes.”

Danyelle Goodwin netted six points for MVCS, and Kelsey Mossell and Emily Jasmin added four apiece to close the Eagles’ book. Grace Pease topped the South Royalton ledger with six points, followed by five from Hannah Kilburn.

The Eagles are off for the holidays until meeting Trinity Baptist on Jan. 3. The Royals have one more game before the break, a trip to Leland & Gray on Wednesday.

Quechee — The Royals’ Nicholas Howe outscored the Eagles on his own, posting a career-high 42 points in South Royalton’s second win in as many starts.

It took a little time, however. Six-man Mid Vermont (1-2) stayed with the visitors through the half, trailing 27-19 but battling foul trouble. That’s when Howe took off, leading the Royals to a 26-9 third period to assume control.

SoRo coach Pete Howe credited the work of Dalton McDougall (11 points), Connor Lambert and guard Jake Hewitt for aiding the Royals’ big second half.

Josh King had 17 points, Jake Roberts scored 14 and Daniel Roberts finished with nine for MVCS. The Eagles host Websterville on Jan. 3. South Royalton is off until a Dec. 30 visit to Hazen.

East Montpelier, Vt. — The Wasps found out the hard way that, like yawning, an off night on the floor has a way of affecting everyone.

Woodstock (3-1) shot just 14-for-45 from the field, struggling with the easy stuff as the Raiders pulled away. Caleb Webb (15 points), Bill Wood (14) and Jack Arthur (11) all hit for double figures for the Wasps.

“We did not shoot very well,” Woodstock coach Joel Carey said following the Wasps’ first loss of the season. “The majority of those (misses) were easily inside of five feet of the hoop.”

Woodstock hosts Mill River on Thursday.
