Las Vegas — Donnel Pumphrey broke the NCAA career rushing record Saturday, running for 115 yards and a touchdown in San Diego State’s 34-10 victory over Houston in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Pumphrey passed former Wisconsin star Ron Dayne’s mark of 6,397 yards on a 15-yard run early in the fourth quarter, with teammates swarming him on the sideline, and wrapping up his sensational career in his Nevada hometown with 6,405 yards.

Pumphrey’s senior total of 2,133 yards rushing ranks in the top 10 for an FBS player.

Albuquerque, n.m. — Richard McQuarley had two short touchdown runs and New Mexico won a bowl for the second time in a half-century, topping Texas-San Antonio.

The Lobos’ only win since taking the 1961 Aviation Bowl had been a 2007 victory over Nevada in the New Mexico Bowl.

The Lobos (9-4) gave coach Bob Davie his first bowl win — he lost three times at Notre Dame and also last year with New Mexico in this bowl.

Camellia BowlAppalachian St. 31, Toledo 28

Montgomery, Ala. — Marcus Cox rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown and Michael Rubino kicked the go-ahead 39-yard field goal to lift Appalachian State over Toledo.

Cox became the ninth FBS player with four 1,000-yard seasons and the 22nd to top 5,000 in his career. Game MVP Taylor Lamb passed for 119 yards and a touchdown and ran for 126 yards and a score.

Cure Bowl Arkansas State 31, UCF 13

Orlando, Fla. — Justice Hansen threw three touchdown passes to Kendall Sanders to help Arkansas State beat UCF in the Cure Bowl.

Hanses and Sanders hooked up for touchdown strikes of 12, 75 and 17 yards, but the biggest plays of the night came from the Red Wolves’ special teams. They scored on a blocked punt and produced two turnovers that were turned into touchdowns.

Hansen completed 12 of 26 passes for 205 yards.

Atlanta — Grambling State won the Celebration Bowl when it blocked an extra-point kick set back 15 yards by an excessive celebration with just over two minutes left, holding off North Carolina Central.

Joseph McWilliams surged in and swatted Brandon McLaren’s 35-yard try with 2:14 remaining to preserve the Tigers’ edge.

Kansas City, Kan. — Kyle Zimmerman passed for 100 yards and Northwest Missouri State plowed over North Alabama in snow-globe conditions to win its second straight NCAA Division II title and record sixth overall.

Baseball White Sox, 1B Reach Deal

Chicago — First baseman Jose Abreu and the Chicago White Sox agreed on a one-year contract for $10,825,000.

The deal Saturday avoids salary arbitration. Abreu hit 25 home runs with 100 RBIs while batting .293.

Abreu has had at least 30 doubles, 25 homers and 100 RBIs in each of his first three seasons in the majors, all with the White Sox.

Skiing Stuhe Wins World Cup Downhill

Val d’Isere, France — Ilka Stuhec continued her outstanding form by winning a World Cup downhill race on Saturday for her fourth victory so far in a remarkable season.

The 26-year-old Slovenian finished .28 seconds ahead of Austrian Cornelia Huetter and .32 clear of Italian Soffia Goggia — who is also enjoying a breakthrough season.

Colleges Soccer Team Suspended Over Comments

St. Louis — The men’s soccer team at Washington University in St. Louis was indefinitely suspended for what the university calls sexually explicit comments and other inappropriate behavior toward the women’s soccer team.

The university said in a statement that comments made toward members of the women’s team in an online document from 2015 were “degrading and sexually explicit.”

Three men’s teams in the Ivy League have been involved in suspensions for similar behavior since November: Harvard University men’s soccer, some members of Columbia University’s wrestling team and Princeton University’s men’s swimming and diving team.
