The Hanover High girls basketball team, playing without three standouts from last season’s team, showed Friday that it’s still a force with which to be reckoned. The Marauders routed visiting Bow, 52-29.
Reserve point guard Maddie McCorkle had 13 points to lead the Marauders during their opener. McCorkle, the daughter of Dartmouth College associate head football coach Sammy McCorkle, saw extensive action with starting point guard Diana Schwarz in foul trouble.
Sophomore Julia Golder had 14 points and 12 rebounds and freshman Willa Parkins had six points and 10 rebounds for Hanover, which features five freshmen and two sophomores on a roster that returns only four players from last season. The top two scorers from that campaign, Silke Milliman and Caroline Merguerian, departed for prep school and another starter, Lois Schwarz, underwent surgery for a torn knee ligament during August.
“Everyone contributed tonight,” said coach Dan O’Rourke, whose team next plays Wednesday against visiting Lebanon. “It’s going to have to be by committee because we have so many young players.”
Freshman Bella Bardales had seven points and classmate Ella Edmonds had five for the Marauders.
Lebanon
Freshman Rebecca Wright had 10 points for Lebanon and Maddie Hastings added eight points. Raiders head coach Tim Kehoe was impressed with the play of sophomore guard Zoe Soule, who had three points.
“She came off the bench and lit it up defensively,” Kehoe said. “She was sort of a catalyst for us.”
The Raiders travel to Hanover for the annual Wechsler Cup doubleheader against the Marauders at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

“I think Monadnock’s the best team we’ll play all year,” said Mascoma coach John Billings. “They started out playing us man-to-man and we were able to spread them out and get some back cuts and nice drives to the basket. Then they switched to a zone and we struggled to hit jump shots and deal with their length and athleticism.”
The Royals, who play Hillsboro-Deering on Jan. 3, were scheduled to compete twice in the Fall Mountain tournament shortly after Christmas. However, that event has been canceled. Stevens and Newport were the other teams on the bill.
Woodsville
“At least we’re no longer averaging more than one per minute,” joked Woodsville coach Russ Wilcox, whose team hosts Colebrook on Tuesday. “We rebounded really well and got lots of second-chance points.”
Junior forward Lily Kinder had 18 points and freshman forward MaKenzie Dennis added seven for the Engineers, who led, 23-14, at halftime.
White River Junction
“At halftime we talked about stepping up our defense, having active hands and rebounding the heck out of the ball,” Guerin said.

“We came out firing on all cylinders,” LaTorra said. “Our pressure was working. We were moving the ball.”
