Orford — Every season brings a new revelation, and Rivendell Academy girls basketball coach Hank Tenney may have just had his.

Casey Ghio backed a 25-point night from Riley Thomson with eight points and seven rebounds in the paint as the Raptors beat Oxbow, 48-33, on Wednesday night.

Thomson, a junior, is a known quantity on the basketball court, having scored more than 500 points through her first two seasons. Sophomore Ghio, however, provided an unexpected spark for Rivendell (2-0), one that Tenney hopes can be repeated through the season.

“Last year, she played junior varsity and swung a little bit with the varsity,” Tenney said. “From last year to this, she’s probably the most improved player on the team.

“She did a great job on the boards. That’s a great game for first time on varsity.”

Rivendell spent much of the night making hay at the free-throw line. Of the Raptors’ 16 second-quarter points, half came from the charity stripe through Thomson, Mikayla DeBois and Jenna Gilbert. The hosts sank another eight free throws in the fourth quarter and finished with 18 on the night.

Ghio added two steals and two assists to her stat line. DeBois had a team-best six rebounds, Sierra Longto came off the bench to grab five and Thomson grabbed four.

Sara Walker had a big game for the Olympians (0-1), pouring in 15 points and playing well on the glass, Tenney noted. Alex Giesing added eight points for the O’s, who host Lake Region on Thursday.

Rivendell has a long break to prepare for a Dec. 23 date against Thetford.
