Newport
Bunnell, who pleaded guilty to the charges in November, received a 10- to 20-year sentence on one charge of aggravated felonious sexual assault, which will be followed by three to six years on a second charge. On the third charge, he received a suspended 10- to 20-year sentence.
Prosecutors would be able to bring forward the suspended sentence until 2046 if Bunnell violates his parole.
Bunnell also was ordered to participate in the sexual offenders program and in any counseling or education ordered by the prison. He also must register as a sex offender.
Bunnell, who has past convictions for theft and disorderly conduct, among others, was arrested in April. Assistant Sullivan County Attorney Justin Hersh said outside the courtroom on Tuesday that Bunnell committed the crimes between April 2015 and April of this year. Police previously said Bunnell knew the victim.
Bunnell read a statement in court apologizing to the victim.
“I am more than deeply sorry. I wish I could take back the pain I caused,” Bunnell said.
