Orford — The Rivendell Academy girls basketball team erupted with a 25-point second quarter on the way to a season-opening 52-14 victory over visiting Twin Valley on Friday night.

Riley Thomson led the Raptors with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Jenna Gilbert added 12 points while drawing praise from coach Hank Tenney for her rebounding effort (six boards). Mikayla DeBois had six points, five rebounds and five steals. Leah Rutherford chipped in four points with six boards and four steals.

Rivendell led 35-6 at halftime before hitting a cold steak in a two-point third quarter. The Raptors were up and down the floor in the first half when they put up 36 shots in 16 minutes of action to take control of the game.

“Defensively in the first half, we set the stage,” Tenney said. “The kids played really well. We graduated four starters last year, so this is a nice feeling tonight as they get used to things this year.”

With a big lead entering the second half, freshmen Mikayla Stever and Sienna Carter (two points each) both made strong initial varsity impressions.

“We had some good kids coming up. We got to play some swing players and get everybody into the game. It’s a nice opener for us,” Tenney said.

Rivendell hosts rival Oxbow on Wednesday night.

Wilton, n.h. — The Engineers (3-0) awoke after halftime, outscoring the Warriors, 18-0,in the third quarter to pull away for good.

Lily Kinder scored 15 of her game-high 24 points in the third-quarter barrage. Ilanya Fields added five points. Woodsville started slowly and led just 13-7 at halftime.

“We need to keep up our defensive intensity. When it’s there, we score easily,” Engineers coach Russ Wilcox said.

Woodsville hosts Lisbon on Monday.

Lebanon 50, Coe-Brown 31

Northwood, n.h. — The Raiders overcame a slow start with a suffocating second quarter to take control over the Bears in their season opener.

Trailing 8-5 after the first quarter, the Raiders blanked the Bears in the second to lead 20-8 at halftime. Meredith Melendy and Anna Wolke each had 13 points for Lebanon. Freshman Rebecca Wright added eight, and Joslin Wainwright had seven.

“It was a typical first game with lots of turnovers and lots of jitters,” Lebanon coach Tim Kehoe said. “The kids settled down and we played really well defensively in the second quarter. Overall, it’s a good first game on the road.”

Lebanon hosts Bishop Brady on Tuesday.

Newport 48Hillsboro-Deering 21

Hillsboro, n.h. — The Tigers outscored the host Hillcats, 16-1, in the first quarter and never looked back, improving to 2-1 on the young season.

Selena Coronis led Newport with 13 points. Alyssa Burr and Anna Pysz each added 11. Kyrstin Kibbey had seven points. The Tigers bookended their strong first quarter by outscoring Hillsboro-Deering, 9-0, in the fourth.

“The girls came out and took care of business with even scoring across the board. I’m happy with the way we played on the road,” Newport coach Ross Dole said.

The Tigers face Monadnock on Sunday in the Keene Holiday Tournament.

Stevens 45, Franklin 24

Claremont — The Cardinals (3-0) kept up their winning ways with tight defense and a pair of double-digit games.

Alexis Aiken hit for 15 points and Jenna Pond contributed 10 for Stevens. The home team defense, meanwhile, kept the Golden Tornadoes to five points in three of the four periods.

“Overall, I would say it was a huge team effort,” Stevens coach Ivy Condon said. “They all played really well.”

Condon expects a stiff test in the Cardinals’ next game, a Tuesday trip to Kearsarge.

Lin-Wood 38Mount Royal 36

Sunapee — The Knights’ furious fourth-quarter comeback came up just short against the visiting Lumberjacks.

“We put a press on, got some steals and had several open looks to tie or take the lead (in the final minutes) but couldn’t finish,” Mount Royal coach Derek Tremblay said.

The Knights (1-1) trailed, 33-20, after three quarters and outscored Lin-Wood, 16-5, in the final frame to get within two points of the lead. Marylin LaRose led the hosts with 18 points. Alexis Matte added 12 points.

Mount Royal hosts Hinsdale on Thursday.

Whitefield, n.h. — The Royals (0-3) came out on the short end in a tough battle at the Spartans.

Coach John Billings praised the play of Aliviene Adams and Justine Martin. The Royals visit Hopkinton on Tuesday.

Sunapee — Behind 16 points apiece from Andrew and Alex Normandin, the Knights (1-0) won their NHIAA Division IV varsity debut.

Mount Royal took a 30-20 lead into the half and needed to buckle down on defense after that point to secure the victory. The Knights picked up important minutes from junior varsity callups Zeke Swenson and Matthew Gerlack, who were needed to fill in for two starters absent for disciplinary reasons.

“It feels really good,” Mount Royal coach Matthew McMenaman said. “I’m happy with the kids.”

Gus LaRose helped out with 10 points for Mount Royal, which hosts Hinsdale on Thursday.

Mascoma 73White Mountains 40

West Canaan — Alex Schwarz had 26 points to lead the Royals in a dominant season-opening performance.

Schwarz filled the stat sheet all night, adding 12 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Junior Tyler Warner came off the bench to drain four 3-pointers on his way to 18 points. Dakota Decocq and Tyler Findley each added seven points.

“As a team, we rebounded well and had a lot of assisted baskets. It was a really good effort. We were beat up a bit last year, so it’s good to see them get off to a good start,” Mascoma coach Jim Barry said.

The Royals host Hopkinton on Tuesday.

Woodsville 48Wilton-Lyndeborough 41

Wilton, n.h. — The Engineers (1-0) turned the long trip south into a fruitful one with a quality road victory over the Warriors.

Sam Pushee led the Woodsville attack with 18 points. Cooper Davidson added 10 points. Eric Thornton and Billy Green each had seven, and Matt Thornton had six. Woodsville led, 11-5, after the first quarter and closed strong with 16 points in the fourth.

The Engineers host Lisbon on Monday.

Newport 43, Newfound 30

Bristol, n.h. — The Tigers (1-0) jumped to a 14-2 lead after one quarter and were never headed off in their season-opening victory.

Ethan Houde had a game-high 17 points for Newport, backed by 10 from Ty Richardson and nine from Brandon Sondrini. The effort came in handy for a Tiger roster that ran only six deep with a handful of other players out with injuries.

“We came out in a zone press, and I think that kind of rattled them,” Newport coach Greg Pickering said. “We didn’t come away with a ton of steals or anything … but it was a start we needed.”

Newport hosts Windsor on Monday night.

Lisbon 46, Sunapee 45

Sunapee — The visiting Panthers beat a Sunapee defensive scheme and hit the game-winning basket with a second to play to spoil the Lakers’ debut.

Lisbon took possession down by a point following a Sunapee turnover with 5 seconds left. Two Lakers got their hands on the ensuing inbounds pass but not enough to regain the ball and deny Lisbon.

“The kids were excited; they worked well together,” first-year Sunapee coach Tim Puchtler said. “The kids were disappointed with the loss, but they were also excited with the potential vision of improvement that can happen.”

Cade Robinson (15 points) and Sean Shisko (12) both buried four 3-pointers for Sunapee. Hank Vincent contributed a pair of bombs on a 10-point night.

The Lakers visit Hinsdale on Tuesday.

Twin Valley 50, Rivendell 34

Orford — The Wildcats pulled away with a 16-4 second quarter to spoil opening night for the Raptors (0-1).

Brent Swanson hit for a game-high 15 points for the visitors. Twin Valley stifled Rivendell’s offense for three quarters before the Raptors used trapping pressure for a satisfactory final period.

“They got a lot of length, and they’ve got some speed,” Rivendell coach Jeff Huntington said. “They hurried us a little bit.”

Owen Pelletier led Rivendell with 10 points, backed by eight from Shane Smith and seven from Noah Martel. The Raptors host Oxbow on Monday night.

Men’s BasketballHusson 86, Colby-Sawyer 70

New London — Raheem Anderson’s 29-point effort pushed the visiting Eagles (5-1) past the Chargers (3-4) in a North Atlantic Conference matchup.

Anderson went 11-for-23 from the floor and his six of his 12 tries from beyond the 3-point arc.

Jourdain Bell notched 17 points, Milani Hicks scored 15 and Dana Bean provided a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Chargers, who host Maine Maritime today at 1 p.m.

Women’s BasketballHusson 75, Colby-Sawyer 55

New London — Despite getting a game-high 20 points from White River Junction native Chelsea Dow, the Chargers (5-3) couldn’t hand the Eagles (5-0) their first loss of the NAC season.

Freshman Dow, a graduate of Connecticut’s Cheshire Academy, hit seven of 13 field-goal attempts, adding five steals and three rebounds.

Another CSC freshman, Tianna Sugars, hauled down 11 rebounds and blocked seven shots, the latter serving as second-most in program history.

The Chargers host Maine Maritime this afternoon.
