New York — Dartmouth College linebacker Folarin Orimolade was named the Ivy League’s defensive player of the year and Asa S. Bushnell Cup recipient during a ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Monday.

A 6-foot, 235-pound senior linebacker from Burtonsville, Md., Orimolade is the seventh Big Green player, and the first on from the defensive side of the ball, to earn the honor.

A preseason All-American who was also a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defender in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision, Orimolade led the Big Green with 83 tackles, 14½ for loss, with nine sacks and five forced fumbles. He’s among the top players in the country on a per-game basis in each of those categories, topping the FCS in forced fumbles per contest (0.5) and 10th in sacks per game (0.9).

The Dartmouth tri-captain and all-New England selection was twice named the league’s defensive player of the week during the Big Green’s 4-6 campaign. Both honors came after wins over Holy Cross and Cornell in which Orimolade recorded a pair of sacks. He added a career-high 13 tackles in his final game for Dartmouth, a loss at Princeton on Nov. 19.

Princeton running back John Lovett earned the league’s offensive player of the year award.

Girls BasketballKearsarge 51, Mascoma 14

North Sutton, n.h. — Still stunned from an overtime loss at Stevens to open the season on Friday, the Royals (0-2) couldn’t keep up with the Cougars on Monday night.

“It was tough to play after Friday,” said Mascoma coach John Billings, whose Royals saw a double-digit lead get away in the fourth quarter of a 38-37 defeat to the Cardinals. “To play the Monday after was emotionally draining. … You can’t judge us by this game. The program is moving in the right direction.”

Mascoma is off until a visit to White Mountains on Friday.
