Hanover, N.H. — Born in his grandparents house on Staten Island on Aug. 14, 1923, Robert Evans Haynes died peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016, at his beloved Hanover home at age 93 with his family by his side. Predeceased by his parents, Alfred D. and Frances (Evans) Haynes, and his brothers, Alfred D. Jr. and Richard A. Haynes, he is survived by a sister Elizabeth (Haynes ) Kelley and was the proud father of two sons, Robert E. Jr. (Brenda Campbell) and Byron W. Haynes (Deborah Tear) both of Norwich, Vt. and a daughter Christine Haynes (Christopher Myers); as well as eight grandchildren: Austin, Colin, Courtney, Grant and Evan Haynes; Andrew, Caroline and Byron Myers; and Fiston Kahindo. His marriage to Ruth “Sue” (Weiler) Haynes, ended in divorce.

Bob grew up in Hackensack, N.J., and graduated from Rutgers University where he was a Varsity rower and President of the Chi Phi Fraternity. After his service in WW II as a U.S. Army Staff Sargent stationed on Guam, Bob met his wife with whom he raised his family in Irvington-on-Hudson, N.Y. Bob spent his entire professional career with General Foods Corporation where, as Director of Creative Services, he was involved in many company initiatives including the mentorship program with Tougaloo College, The United Negro College Fund and the Ad Council from which he received the Robert Goldstein Award for Distinguished Service as a director. Respected and admired in his industry, Bob took particular pride in his civic involvement. In Irvington, he was active in the United Way of Westchester County, The Children’s Village, the Experiment in International Living and The Westchester Concert Series, and was a long-serving member of the Irvington Board of Education, where he was known for his commitment to reform and access to excellence in public education. Bob retired to Hanover where he generously donated his time and talents to The Upper Valley Hostel. He was a track official at Dartmouth College, a member of The Leander Rowing Club in Henley, England, The River Valley Club, The Rutgers Alumnae Association and Friends of Rutgers Rowing.

Bob loved his gym days at RVC, Friday lunches at the Norwich Inn with his friend of 62 years, John Hathaway, beautiful music, a good round of golf, curling, nice manners, any rowing event but especially The Henley Regatta, The New York Times, books of all kinds, The Scarlet Knight, a good row, the Connecticut River, his dedicated care-givers, time with his family and an extra dry Tanqueray martini which he enjoyed every day up until the end of his life.

A memorial celebration of Bob’s life will be held in Rollins Chapel in Hanover, New Hampshire in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The National Rowing Foundation, 67 Mystic Rd., N. Stonington, CT 06359, 860-535-0634.
