Note: Since we missed last week’s edition of this column, we are featuring up to two pets per organization this week! Don’t forget to check in with the organizations to confirm their holiday hours. Happy Thanksgiving, and happy Adopt a Senior Pet month.

As always, the descriptions and photos of the pets are submitted by the organizations and sent to the Valley News. If you’re interested in meeting or adopting one of the featured pets, please contact the organizations via the links in the pets’ descriptions.

And if you’re involved with a pet adoption organization in the Upper Valley and want to contribute to this feature, please email mcassidy@vnews.com.

Junior the dog, adoptable from Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society

“Hi! My name is Junior and I’m a 7-year-old Rottweiller mix.

“I came to Lucy Mackenzie with my best friend, Mia. We’ve been together since we were wee little puppies. Unfortunately, our owner had to move and couldn’t take us with them.

“It was all very sad, but lots of good things have happened since we’ve been here. We have both been spayed and neutered and have been brought current on our vaccinations. Both of us had really severe skin conditions, too, which has vastly improved under the veterinarian’s supervision.

“We’ve learned lots of new things, like how to walk on a leash, how to have patience and how to behave. Things are going really well, but we would love to find a new home.

“If you have room to spare and love to give, stop in and meet us today. And, don’t forget: November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month. In celebration, Lucy Mackenzie is waiving all adoption fees on animals 7 years or older. You only have to make a donation on your new animal’s behalf. Stop in and meet us and all our senior friends!”

Junior is up for adoption from Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society, located at 4832 Route 44 in West Windsor and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 12-4 p.m. Lucy Mackenzie is also on Facebook and Twitter and can be reached at 802-484-5829.

AdoptablePets-112316-Sullivan-Cornelius.jpg
Cornelius the cat, adoptable from Sullivan County Humane Society

“I am 4.5-month-old Cornelius! I was rescued, along with my brother and sister, from a barn overrun with cats. Fortunately, my kind rescuers also helped to get all of the adult cats fixed so that there will not be more homeless kittens born there.

“My brother and sister were adopted and now I want my furrever home, too. I am a little shy at first — my brother was the braver one and helped me to feel safe — but I do warm up quickly. I love to play! I am vet checked, spayed, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, treated for fleas and worms, tested negative for FIV/FeLV, and microchipped. Come meet me today!”

Cornelius is up for adoption from Sullivan County Humane Society, located at 145 Broad St. in Claremont. Please see hours on the humane society website at www.sullivancountyhumanesociety.org and Facebook. Call 603-542-3277 or email sullivanhumane@hotmail.com.

Beanie the dog, and …

AdoptablePets-112316-UVHS-Doug.jpg
Doug the dog, both adoptable from the Upper Valley Humane Society

It’s Adopt a Senior Pet Month!

Beanie and Doug are both older Beagles in search of loving homes. Beanie is 8 years old and Doug is 7. Both are sweet guys who love to be outside and love people. Beagles tend to be vocal, so apartment living is not the best idea for either of these two.

The senior dog adoption fee is being reduced to half price this month in celebration of Adopt a Senior Pet Month!

Beanie and Doug are up for adoption from the Upper Valley Humane Society, located at 300 Old Route 10 in Enfield and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The Upper Valley Humane Society is also on Facebook and Instagram and can be reached at 603-448-6888.

AdoptablePets-112316-Sullivan-Sassy.jpg
Sassy the cat, adoptable from Sullivan County Humane Society

One-year-old Sassy is anything but sassy. She is a sweet quiet girl that would love to curl up next to her new mom or dad in a nice, quiet home.

Sassy is our second longest resident. We think she gets overlooked because she does not demand attention.

Sassy is vet checked, spayed, treated for fleas and worms, vaccinated or rabies and distemper and microchipped. Please come meet her soon — she would love to curl up in front of your fireplace this holiday season.

Sassy is up for adoption from Sullivan County Humane Society, located at 145 Broad St. in Claremont. Please see hours on the humane society website at www.sullivancountyhumanesociety.org and Facebook. Call 603-542-3277 or email sullivanhumane@hotmail.com.

AdoptablePets-112316-RVAPL-ScaredyTom.jpg
Tom the cat, adoptable from River Valley Animal Protection League

Tom is a magical boy. When he came to the shelter he was almost bald and covered with scabs from a severe reaction to a major flea infestation. Being mostly naked only showed off the fact that he was also very thin. Tom was a pretty sorry sight.

At first, he was completely mortified to be at the shelter. He hid behind his litter box in the corner of his cage and stared around with his eyes dilated so far they looked half as big as they are. A volunteer gave him a soft cuddle hut/bed to help him stay warm and later found it upside down in his litter box, with him inside it, which sounds horrible, but was actually really cute, because …

After Tom had relaxed a little bit about being at the shelter, we found that when anyone spent a little time with him, he would come out of hiding and he was an absolute sweetheart. He trots right out and wants to be petted on his gross, scabby head and his silly, bald hiney. He loves sharing kisses and headbutts. It’s impossible to avoid falling in love with him. Here is this scrawny, scaredy little guy that comes out to lavish and be lavished with affection, and he makes people feel special. That was exactly what happened when he came out of his upside-down litter box hut.

There isn’t much to Tom, yet. He’s still recovering and gaining weight slowly, but every last little bit of him is made of love. Nourish that and Tom will make sure that you feel special, every single day.

Tom is up for adoption from the River Valley Animal Protection League, located at 60 Cummings Ave. in Charlestown and open to the public Mondays, 4-7 p.m., and Saturdays, 1-4 p.m., or by appointment by calling 603-826-3061. The River Valley Animal Protection League is also on Facebook.

AdoptablePets-112316-LucyMac-Melody.jpg
Melody, adoptable from Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society

“Hi! My name is Melody and I’m a 10-year-old spayed female. I came to Lucy Mackenzie after my owner died.

“Although things have gone really well here, and I’ve received some much needed medical attention, I can’t wait to find a new home of my own. I have a tendency to over-groom when I’m stressed, which leads to hair loss. I now take a daily medication to help ease the stress and it’s made a huge difference!

“I’d ideally like a more quiet household where I was the only cat. I love cuddles and attention, playing, and treats. I love my naps and long for a nice spot of sun to be able to lounge in without a worry in the world.

“If you have room in your home and heart from a senior cat that is really in need of a break, stop in and meet me today!  And, don’t forget: November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month. In celebration, Lucy Mackenzie is waiving the adoption fee on all animals over 7 years old.”

Melody is up for adoption from Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society, located at 4832 Route 44 in West Windsor and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 12-4 p.m. Lucy Mackenzie is also on Facebook and Twitter and can be reached at 802-484-5829.
