Running as a member of the Essex, Vt.,-based Green Mountain Athletic Association, Shepherd finished the 4-kilometer course in 14 minutes, 15 seconds in wet, muddy and snowy conditions.
He qualified for the event by placing seventh at the New England Regional championships a week earlier, running the same distance in much more favorable conditions in Amherst, N.H., and finishing in 14:10.
The top runner in the 13-14-year-old age group at Eastern Regionals, Sheherd will join GMAA teammate to the National Championships, to be held Dec. 10 in Hoover, Ala.
West Lebanon
On Saturday, the Wild took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Nathan St. Pierre, assisted by Pratt Stetson, amd Casey Graham on a feed by Andrew Duany.
After a scoreless second period, the Wild clinched the win in the third when Stetson scored from Lucie Turcotte and St. Pierre.
Goalie Danny Drebber made 13 saves — nine in the second period — to earn the shutout.
On Nov. 13, the Wild rallied for a comeback win over the Avalanche on the road.
Trailing 2-0, Duany scored from Stetson to pull the visitors within a goal before St. Pierre tied the game with an unassisted tally.
Graham followed with the winner, assisted by Stetson and Turcotte, and Turcotte added an empty-net insurance goal with 10 seconds remaining.
Drebber made 21 saves in the effort.
The Woodstock U12 Blue team knocked off St. Albans’ U12 Orange team, 4-1, on Saturday before a 4-2 win at Middlebury on Sunday.
Henry Trimpi opened the second period with two quick goals for Woodstock against St. Albans, the second coming after Michael LaCroix found him coming out of the penalty box.
Graem McKeon and Trey Jones added unassisted goals in the second period for the Woodstock Blues.
On Sunday, Griffin Piconi scored a first period goals unassisted and Woodstock remained in control.
Charlie Macko (assisted by Ryan Runstein), LaCroix (assisted by Macko) and Jones added goals down the stretch in the win.
Woodstock’s U14 Reds had a rest day Sunday before battling through two road games — and wintry weather — on Sunday.
First driving through the Green Mountain pass in the snow to face Middlebury, Woodstock’s Owen Coates scored on a feed from Field Willis as the teams were in a 1-1 stalemate at second intermission.
Finding renewed energy in the third, Tommy Bissaillon scored twice and Luke Ricci once as the Reds rallied for a 4-2 win.
Field and Adam Yates earned assists in the third.
After dashing through more snow northbound to Waterbury, Woodstock fell 3-0 in the neutral site against Essex.
“They played a great skating game,” said Woodstock coach Dave Willis. “We came with a lot of pressure but could not put the puck in the net.”
Woodstock’s U10 team fell 6-2 to PVA U10 Black on Saturday in Saxton’s River, Vt., before a 6-2 win at Rutland on Sunday.
Gracie LaPerle scored both Woodstock goals during Saturday’s loss.
On Sunday at Georgetti Rink, Kassidy Haley scored twice, while Tyler Spaulding hustled swiftly and Dominic Palazzo was solid in goal.
Woodstock’s U14 White squad suffered a physically punishing 5-0 loss to Northshire in Essex in Manchester, Vt., on Saturday, but rebounded for a 3-2 comeback win against Essex in Waterbury on Sunday.
Essex — which had beaten Woodstock’s Whites in each of the teams’ previous two meetings — went ahead 2-0 on Saturday.
Woodstock rallied to tie it with goals from Cam White and Auden Oliver-Yeager, Nicholas Lee assisting on both.
Oliver-Yeager netted the winner, carrying the puck end-to-end and deking a defender before the goal.
Ethan Mello preserved the win with a highlight-worthy glove save on an Essex breakaway late in the game.
Woodstock
Skylar Haley, Faye Stevens, Emily Dean, Lily Gubbins, Myah Warl, Sophia Yates and Beal Dunne scored tournament goals for Woodstock U13, which opened its leg of the tourney with a friendly fire loss to Woodstock U16, 3-2.
After losses to West Lake (6-1) and Assabet Valley (4-3), Woodstock rallied for a 4-0 win against Twin Valley in Game 4.
Goaltender Ellie Stadina played solidly all tournament for Woodstock’s U13 girls.

Speakers for the conference will include retired Hofstra University coach Bill Edwards and Dartmouth College assistant coaches Molly Fichtner and Jackie Traina. After the conference, Fichtner and Traina will lead 30 pitchers and catchers through a three-hour clinic.
The cost for coaches is $50 through Dec. 19 and $65 at the door. The cost for players seeking to join the clinic is $150 through Dec. 19 and $160 if postmarked after the deadline. Player costs include admission to the conference as well.

The Dartmouth College men’s and women’s basketball teams will host a free youth basketball clinic at Leede Arena on Friday.
All participants will receive a voucher for free admission to one men’s game and one women’s game.

The clinic is geared toward youths or adults looking to get into officiating basketball for the first time. Pause will provide an overview of the sport, including pre- and post-game responsbilities for referees, basic signalling and enforcement of rules. There is no charge to take part in the clinic, which runs from 1-2 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring questions on how to get involved in refereeing basketball contests.

Upper Valley Curling and the Woodstock Curling Club are both open to anyone age 15 and older interested in learning more about the sport. WABA sessions will be held on Saturdays from 5:30-8 p.m. The club will be holding learn-to-curl events, and more experienced players will have opportunities for regular competitive play.

Wednesday Walkers features easy morning hikes at sites around the Upper Valley.
Each hike begins by meeting at the Hartford Municipal Building at 9 a.m. for transportation to that day’s hike. The winter schedule:

Feb. 8: Storrs Pond, Hanover.
March 1: Mink Brook Marsh, Hanover.
Participants are asked to bring snacks, bottled water, properly layered clothing and proper footwear to handle winter conditions. Wednesday Walkers is open to all ages, and each hike is done by noon.
